And the Winner is....
Posted: November 25, 2016

The clinking of dishes could be heard throughout the pound as pets helped each other in cleaning up after their big feast. Some of the pound residents had gone outside to toss around a football. Most of the remaining pets were still lounging around the pound’s common room, conversing with others while comfortably digesting their meal. The judges were comparing notes while seated around a table at the back of the room.
Keilly
“Excuse me, everyone! If I may have your attention…?” Keilly walked up to the front of the room. “I’ve been conferring with the judges, and the final results are in!” The chatter in the room died down as all eyes and ears turned to Keilly. “Once again, let us thank our wonderful chefs for their participation in this competition. It has been a wonderful showdown, and these three have keep us on our toes with each new culinary delight!” There was a brief round of applause.

“Now, let me tell you,” Keilly continued, “The numbers came in really close. Although we have to declare one winner, the ranks are all of the same high caliber. Each chef fought hard to earn that rank, so no one should be discouraged because of how they placed. So without further ado…”

“Third place, with a collective score of 3.789… goes to Clayton!”

“Second place, with a collective score of 3.857… goes to Erika!”

“This, of course, means first place goes to Gordon, with a score of 3.939!”

The room rocked with cheers and applaud. Keilly tried to quiet the crowd to continue, “One more thing! The popular vote dish for Thanksgiving goes to the Turkey Stuffing Nest, also by Gordon!”

Gordon stood at the front, looking very poised and pleased with the outcome. Clayton leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed, grumbling and looking disgusted. Erika politely clapped. It took several more minutes for the room to quiet down again. Gordon gladly accepted the microphone from Keilly in order to say a few words.

“Thank you! Thank you, all!” Gordon called out. “I’m glad I could share my cooking talents with all of you over these past few days, and I appreciate all of the support I’ve received. Now it can be declared, without a doubt, that I hold the title of best chef in Mistica!” His words were met with more cheers.

“Or… at least, that’s what I might have declared at one point. But,” Gordon said, turning to look at the other two chefs, “I would be amiss if I did not give credit where credit is due.” Clayton and Erika looked up at Gordon, puzzled. “It would have been one thing had I taken every round with ease, but these two put up quite a fight. And in doing so, bested me in a couple rounds! They showed me that they have genuine skill.” Gordon’s expression softened into one of gratitude. “They have also shown me that while I excel in many areas, there are aspects of cooking that I have yet to polish my skills in. I cannot claim full credit for the Turkey Stuffing Nest. While I made the stuffing, it was Clayton who developed the turkey decoration, and Erika who suggested using a cake pan to shape the nest. So it is only right that these two should join me up here in accepting all of your praise.” Gordon motioned for the other two to stand. Erika happily bounced up, and Clayton gradually stood up. “I believe I owe you both an apology for comments made at the start of all of this. I was wrong, and you made me eat my words. I am sorry.”

Erika enthusiastically hugged Gordon in reply, while Clayton offered a fist bump for a truce. Keilly sniffled a little, holding back tears as she was so happy with how the competition had resolved.

*****

With the competition officially ended, many pets crowded around the three chefs to offer their congratulations and praise. Daniel-san finally managed to slip to the front of the crowd. “I had a great time, thank you,” he said. “I wanted to ask, might you be willing to share your recipes with me? I would love to sell the dishes you made during our round in my shop.”

Erika exclaimed. “Yes. I think that would be great!” Gordon nodded in agreement, and Clayton followed with, “Sure, why not?”

Upon hearing this exchange, Kandie called out, “Clayton, could I have the Chocolate Adra?”

Kyro added, “The Spicy Sweet Potato Soup would be a great addition to my shop.”

A multitude of requests came from all of the shopkeepers, overwhelming the three chefs. It took a while to sort out, but eventually every dish recipe found a home.

*****
“Hmm. It should be just about that time,” Erika said to herself. She walked over to the window. “Three … Two… One…” She tossed it open in the nick of time, and Maury came soaring in.

“Hey, you had a good landing today!” Erika praised him. “Back for another cupcake, my friend?” she grinned, pointing to a nearby tray.

“I would be delighted to relieve you of another cupcake,” Maury grinned back. “I’ve got the next magazine for you, if you need incentive to give it up.”

“No need for the magazine now, I’ve got plenty of inspiration for more dishes,” Erika responded. “And if I need help, I’ve got a few friends I can call on. See?” She held out the tray for Maury, who picked out an upside-down cupcake shaped like a hat.
Image
“That’s wonderful,” Maury said. “Thank you! You have a good day, then!” And with that, Maury returned to his mail route. Erika waved goodbye, and went bake to baking, humming a happy tune.

Feast of Giving!
Posted: November 24, 2016

Keilly kept an eye on the three competitors as they familiarized themselves with the kitchen layout and started on their dishes. Clayton worked on mixing up a batch of cupcakes. Gordon was preparing sausage to go into his stuffing. Erika was peeling and chopping up the sweet potato. Keilly and Kyro placed the first turkey into one of the ovens, while Charitee and Pandoria entertained the pound pets with games and stories. The first half hour of cooking processed smoothly. Everyone was focused on their respective tasks and enjoying an upbeat atmosphere.
Keilly
Keilly wiped her brow as the kitchen had warmed up a lot. Now would be a good time to check in with the competing chefs. Keilly walked over to Erika, who was standing in front of the stove. "How's it going?"

Erika pouted. "I've got a good base for the soup, but I"m still not sure how I add spicy flavor to it without overwhelming the sweetness. Hot spices aren't really used in bakery fare. Have any ideas?"

"Hmm," Keilly smiled thoughtfully. "I don't think I can help you since I'm a judge. You could try checking with someone else that isn't judging, though."

"But-!" Erika looked around the kitchen. "Everyone's judging! That only leaves Gordon and Clayton! I can't ask them."

Keilly shrugged. "Up to you. It'd be a shame to disappoint the kids, but it's your choice." She walked back to her kitchen station but was sure to keep checking to see what Erika would do.

Erika first attempted to figure out which spice worked best by sampling. One super spicy pepper and several glasses of water later, a red-faced Erika decided she had to go about it a different way. She hesitantly slid up next to Gordon. After a moment of figuring out what to say, she quite boldly spoke to him, "Gordon. I know this must seem wrong as a rival in this competition, but... I need your help with my dish."

Gordon turned to her while stirring the contents of a bowl, waiting for her to continue her plea.

"I told you before, I decided to continue in this competition by doing what's best for me, not in trying to best you or Clayton," Erika continued. "Right now, what's best for me, and for everyone else, is that I complete this dish to make those kids happy. So please, help me with your knowledge of spicy food."

Gordon thought about it for a moment, then nodded obligingly. "I suppose I can't argue with that. We must always consider our clients' needs first." Gordon accompanied Erika back to the stove where she explained what she had already put into the soup. Gordon then walked her through a selection of possible spices that might best compliment the sweet flavor.

Erika was delighted with the result. She thanked Gordon. Gordon nodded back, and then pausing, asked of Erika, "Would you be willing to do a favor in return? Ah, hmm... Well, it's hard for me to say, but I don't think my style quite caters to children. My 'minuscule gourmet portions' -- as you might put it -- are pleasing to an adult audience, but aren't necessarily a delight for kids." He looked away, almost too embarrassed to be asking for assistance.

Before Erika could reply, Clayton stepped in and pulled the two close by the shoulders. "What's happenin'? I see you two are getting chummy over here."

"I asked Gordon for help," Erika explained quickly. "He was just asking me for some pointers in return."

"Oh, really?" Clayton replied with a healthy dose of snark. "Now there's something I never thought I'd hear. Is the master chef asking for help? Whatever have we come to?" Clayton motioned dramatically, making a big scene of it.

"Look, I wasn't asking you --"

"Tough luck, I'm interested now. You're getting my help whether you want it or not." Clayton strode over to the workstation where Gordon had left his bowl of stuffing. Fretting about what the Terror Haruba might do, Gordon hurriedly followed after him.

"So, what have we got here?" Clayton looked at the bowl before him.

Gordon reluctantly explained the situation to Clayton. The haruba half-listened, then stuck his paws right into the stuffing and pulled out a chunk.

"Would you not mess up my dish-?!" Gordon started to holler, then realized that Clayton was shaping the stuffing. Grabbing a few cranberries and bay leaves, Clayton had sculpted a mini turkey out of the stuffing within five minutes.

"Aw, that's cute!" Erika exclaimed from behind them. "If you put the rest of the stuffing in a bundt cake pan, you could make a nest for the turkey too. It would be so adorable!"

Gordon stood quietly, head hanging. He wasn't sure whether to be infuriated by the interference or grateful for the help. He sighed, and gradually came around to gracefully accepting Erika's and Clayton's assistance. It would be something that the kids would enjoy, and after all, they were the primary focus.
Keilly
"Who'd have thought," Keilly beamed at the scene unfolding before her. "They're actually working together for a good cause." She sighed happily, then jumped as the oven timer went off beside her. "Looks like the turkeys are cooking quickly. Will everyone be ready within the hour?"

Clayton looked up, startled. "Within the hour? How am I supposed to get these done in time? Arrgh, I'm not used to handling such large orders," he muttered.

"But you got all of those chocolate adras ready for everyone, right?" Erika questioned. "How is this different?"

"I made a mold for casting all of those, and I just had to pour the chocolate in! Not to mention I had more time for that." Clayton shot back. "This requires more assembly."

Erika glanced over at her simmering soup. It would need to cook for a while longer. Gordon had his stuffing in the oven now, and that would take some time too. Erika grabbed Gordon's hand and pulled him over to where Clayton was working. "We've got time to help out. Set up an assembly line for it." She looked over the first few finished cupcakes. "You handle the cupcakes; I'll lay out the bases and candy pieces. Gordon can apply the frosting decor. There's nothing to it; I'll show you how it's done!" Erika took charge for the moment.

Clayton begrudgingly accepted. "I guess this is how you completed that treat tower?"

"Yep!" Erika grinned.

Unnoticed to the three, the other cooks were smiling to each other at the developing camaraderie.

*****

"Good game, everyone!" Charitee called out. "For our next game --" Keilly poked her head in and waved. "Ah, hello, Keilly! How's dinner coming?"

"We'll be out with dinner in just a moment!" Keilly eagerly announced. "Is everybody hungry?"
Keilly
She was met with some thunderous cheers. One by one, the chefs came out with their dishes until all the tables were piled high with food. The kids' eyes sparkled at the sight of all the food, including the dishes they requested.

Image Image Image

"A few words before we begin our meal," Pandoria stood up. "Let us give thanks for that which we have been blessed with in our lives. Even when fortune does not always smile upon us, we have great friends in others who can help us in our times of need. Most of all, thank you to all the chefs in the kitchen tonight for providing us with a spectacular meal! Let's eat!"

And with that, everyone dug into the delicious food!

Final Round!
Posted: November 24, 2016

Keilly was waiting by the pound’s entrance, with two well-known Gurahdi and Gourix on either side. There were a few pieces of equipment set up for the audio, but the stage was no longer present. Erika, Gordon, and Clayton worked their way through the gathered audience to the front.
Keilly
“Is everyone here? Great!” Keilly exclaimed, eager to get started. “As you are aware, this is the final round! We’re changing things up a bit, but before we explain how this round will work, let me introduce you to the judges!” Keilly turned to her left. “Kyro is the chef behind the Flaming Treats shop, and who came up with the final round proceedings.” Turning to her right, “And Charitee is the devoted caretaker of all of the pound pets. Would you two like to do the honors?” Keilly offered her microphone to the two.

"Oh! Um... thank you, Miss Keilly," Kyro accepted the microphone and turned to the chefs. "When Keilly first approached me about being a part of this event, I thought that we could do some good with it. I ran it by Miss Charitee, and she was happy to accept. You see, we're not the only judges. If you'll follow us inside..." Kyro opened the door to the pound and held it for Charitee to lead everyone inside. She led them past the main entrance and into the central common room. There, sitting at several tables, were the current pound residents, all of the prior judges, and Pandoria herself! Everyone gave a quick cheer as the chefs walked in.

"For the final event, you'll be helping us with our Thanksgiving feast!" Charitee exclaimed. "Everyone here will be judging your final dishes. All of the pound pets here would have had a rather empty holiday, but you can help fill it and give them a meal worthy of the day! Keilly and the rest of the food shopkeepers will be working on cooking up several turkeys. You three will be handling dishes to accompany the meal." She smiled, motioning to a few young pets to come forward. "These three have some special requests, which you are to base your dishes upon. Go ahead, dears; let them know what you want."

The first child ran up to Erika, unable to contain her excitement. "Miss Erika, Miss Erika!" She bounced up and down. "I'm so happy you're here, and with all the chefs and even Pandoria is visiting today to eat with us! It's because of Mister Kyro, and he's super kind, and I wanna thank him! He likes spicy things. Could you make something spicy for him? Oh, but not too spicy. I like sweet things. Like sweet potato! Er, but I wanted to ask for soup too... can you do something with alllll of these?"

Erika blinked. "You're asking for... spicy ... sweet potato ... soup?"

"YEAH!" the girl shouted back. "Do that! I wanna try that!" And with that, she ran back to her seat before Erika could confirm or deny whether such a dish could work.

The next young pet picked Gordon. "Turkey is great, but it needs to have some awesome stuffing with it! Don't put it in the turkey, though; it looks gross spilling out. Like spilling its guts all over--"

"Let's not ruin everyone's appetites," Charitee interjected before the description got out of hand. "You want Gordon to make stuffing?"

"Uh-huh!" the kid replied. "Awesome stuffing that isn't gross looking." He returned to his seat.

The final baby pet shyly approached Clayton. "Um... I liked your chocolate dragon. Could... could you make something fun for dessert? I like cupcakes if that helps. Make enough for everybody, okay?" He paused a moment, then quickly jumped at Clayton before anyone could react. The baby pet gave him a tight hug, yelled "Thank you!" then sped back to his seat. Clayton froze for a moment, unsure of how to react but looking a bit ruffled at the incident. Erika smiled, amused, while Gordon stifled a laugh.
Keilly
Keilly took up the microphone once again. "You've got your assignments, now let's get to work! We've got a lot of hungry mouths to feed today! We'll all be cooking together in the pound kitchen, so follow me!" With that, all the chefs exited the common room and filed into the kitchen.

Round 3 Results!
Posted: November 23, 2016

"Now, our judges Sunny and Sebastian will give us the results of Round Three!" Keilly announced to the cheering audience members.

"Hey, Erika," Sebastian started. "I loved your Simple Strawberry Sorbet. Grinding the lemon rind up to serve in place of a syrup base is marvelous, and adds a creamy texture to the sorbet. It has an incredible amount of flavor for being such a simple and straightforward dish. You scored a perfect 4.0!"

"Gordon," Sunny reviewed, "Your Veggie Egg Muffins are great for getting something nutritious into those busy morning routines. It wasn't necessarily a crowd-pleaser across the board, but you highlighted an important issue in eating healthy; a good breakfast is necessary. Bravo! You received a score of 3.6!"

"Clayton, you know us health fanatics well, because you sure nailed it with this smoothie!" Sunny gave a big smile, clearly quite pleased. "You used all of these great fruits that have enormous health benefits. In freezing it, you made it more versatile in travel, and I'm going to have to try using this method too for mixing up different batches of flavors. Beautiful job!"
"The ice cube factor is fantastic!" Sebastian added in his two cents.
"Your final score is... 4.0!"
Keilly
Keilly did a double-take. "Did I hear correctly? It seems we have ... a TIE!" The audience screamed in reply. "First place for round three goes to both Erika and Clayton! Congratulations, you two!"

Gordon's heart sunk, though he did his best to maintain a professional facade. Erika gasped with joy, while Clayton gave a toothy grin, clearly enjoying the fanfare.

It took a while to get the audience to calm down enough. Once she could be heard over the noise, Keilly wrapped up the session. “Thank you for another entertaining round of cooking, chefs. We have one more round to go! For the final round, please meet me by the pet pound tomorrow morning.”

Super Smoothie!
Posted: November 22, 2016

Clayton paced back and forth. Coming up with something to satisfy this round's themes was proving challenging. He had experience with some healthy foods - after all, liver is high in nutrients! That was not a fruit or vegetable, and unlikely to score well, based on how his calamari dish was received with less enthusiasm. He needed something that was pleasing to more pets.

His pacing took him to the window. He stared out, contemplating his rivals' dishes. He had liked the basic approach Erika used, but Gordon had addressed some valid points too. If he could combine the two... he focused on a jogger passing by with a bottle in hand. Clayton grinned, then turned away from the window to get to work.

*****

"Heads up, I'm done," Clayton called out. He delivered a bowl of cubes and several glasses full of a purple liquid to the judges' table.
Keilly
Keilly blinked at the glass before her, unsure of the contents. "I see... what is this exactly?"

Image

"Only the best smoothie around!" Clayton replied. "And this," he continued, pointing to the bowl of cubes, "are ice cubes of the smoothie. My Acai Berry Smoothie Ice Cubes make it easy to have a cold smoothie on the go - just pop several cubes into a travel cup. By the time you're done with your exercise routine or thirsty at the office, it'll have thawed enough to make an excellent chilled smoothie. It's much faster than freezing a whole serving of smoothie. This smoothie features acai and a blend of various berries high in antioxidants. For a change in flavor, you can mix smoothie cubes from different batches!"

"I approve!" Sebastian chimed in. "Simple, yet clever." He sipped happily from the glass before him.

"You betcha!" Clayton beamed. "And the sweet fruit flavor covers up anything you put in, so you can toss in more nutritious stuff, like kale or protein powders or liver --"

Everyone who had been enjoying the smoothies stopped collectively.

" - not that I added any this time," Clayton finished. A sigh of relief went around, and most pets with samples resumed sipping.

Breakfast!
Posted: November 21, 2016

Gordon stared down at his dish. He had been selected to present next in the competition, and everyone was waiting for him to finish. The dish itself was physically ready, but Gordon’s thoughts were questioning everything. Does it satisfy both themes? Is the taste pleasing? Is the presentation appealing? He frowned. His mind had been elsewhere, and he had found it difficult in thinking up an appropriate dish. This dish, in his opinion, was inadequate for impressing the judges, but he had little choice at this point. It was too late to scrap it and start over. He would just have to feign confidence and sell it to the judges to the best of his ability.

Gordon inhaled deeply, exhaled slowly, then straightened his collar. Putting on a professional face, he picked up his dish and strode outside to the waiting judges and audience.

“For my dish, I wanted to concentrate on a meal that is neglected by many in these busy times - breakfast. Getting ready in the morning can leave little time to prepare and eat a proper, nutritious meal. As a result, many forgo having a decent breakfast, or any breakfast at all! To correct that, I made these Veggie Egg Muffins!

Image

They contain healthy vegetables such as carrot, bell pepper, and spinach, concealed within an egg and cheese mixture packed with protein. A batch can be prepared ahead of time and frozen, then heated up quickly in the morning to enjoy!”

Round 3 Begins!
Posted: November 20, 2016

Another morning brought another round of the Food Fest Showdown. The chefs were on stage already and waiting for the day’s event to begin.

Clayton seemed agitated. He was mumbling to himself, likely about placing last in the previous round.

Gordon was pleased with his success in round two but was not feeling content. Before the competition had started, he thought that he would win in a landslide against the other two. However, the close judging results and the loss in the first round had shown him otherwise. It was nagging at him now, and diminishing his sense of victory.

Erika looked relaxed and completely unconcerned. She was even smiling and softly humming a tune. Gordon couldn’t help but comment, “You appear rather upbeat this morning.”

“Mm-hmm!” Erika replied.

“But you didn’t win,” Gordon stated matter-of-factly.

“Maybe not, but that doesn’t mean my dish wasn’t great,” Erika fired back with confidence. “Once I had some idea of what to look for, I really enjoyed coming up with the recipe. It reminded me of why I chose to be a cook in the first place. I got too caught up in trying to outdo you and Clayton, but now I think I just need to do my best for me - I don’t need to beat anyone to prove my worth. And if there were any doubts, there are certainly plenty who already treasure my skills.” Erika waved to some nearby audience members who cheered back.
“…Don’t think that means my dishes will be easy to beat going forward, though.” Erika winked playfully.

“Hmm,” was Gordon’s only reply, adding Erika’s remarks to the other thoughts that were nagging at the back of his mind.

“Oh, and thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Don’t ever do that again, though,” Erika quipped. “Certainly not that way, anyhow.”
Keilly
Keilly, who had quietly arrived a few minutes prior, stood and took center stage. “Good morning! Good morning, everybody!” Her voice caught everyone’s attention. “I see our next judges are just about here, so let’s let them through the crowd, please!” She motioned for the audience to part. Everyone watched as Sunny, followed by Sebastian, made their way up to the stage.

“As I’m sure you’ve already noticed, there are two guest judges this round! We are upping the game - now the contestants must match two qualifications on their entries! Sunny and Sebastian, would you like to tell us what each of you hopes to see from our competitors?”

“Sure, Keilly!” Sunny picked up a microphone. “Hello, chefs! I operate the Health Food store because having a proper diet is important to everyone’s well being. Far too many pets go without getting proper nutrition. So, my challenge for you is to incorporate fruits or veggies into a health-conscious dish!” Sunny beamed and passed the microphone on to Sebastian.

“Hi, guys!” Sebastian called out. “At Freezy Treats, frozen goodies are my specialty. Therefore, I’m asking that your dish be something frozen or freezer-friendly.”

“Well, there you have it!” Keilly pitched in. “Erika, you’re the only one who hasn’t started a round yet, so you’re up first!”

“Sure thing, Keilly!” Erika went to work right away.

*****

“I’m done!” Erika chimed a short while later.

Image

“This is a simple Strawberry Sorbet. You don’t have to get super-complicated for a great dish, and this is a great example of that! It uses organic strawberries, lemons, and sugar, and is garnished with a touch of mint. Nothing more! With no corn syrup, no additives, and no preservatives, it’s a no nonsense dish that is delicious.”

Round 2 Results!
Posted: November 18, 2016

Keilly
“May I have your attention, everybody!” Keilly called out to the audience. “We have the judging results for round two! “Let’s see who had the best seafood dish. Daniel-san, would you please read the results?”

“I’d be glad to!” Daniel-san replied, looking over the notes before him. “First up: Clayton!”

“Your dish was the Fantastic Fried Calamari. It was a good dish, and is traditionally a solid choice as an appetizer on many seafood menus. However, it was not especially creative or unique. It also appears that you turned away some pets, as squid is an unfavorable food for many.”

A few hushed whispers of “tentacles,” drifted among the audience.

“Clayton, your final score is: 3.2!”

“Gordon, you received excellent marks on your Cedar Plank Maple Salmon. From the presentation of the fall foliage to the sweet flavors of harvest cider and maple syrup, you have given us an outstanding dish! Your final score is: 4.1!”

“Erika. We know this round presented a great deal of trouble for you, yet you pulled through with a stellar entry! Your Scrumptious Seaweed Pudding has a delectable, soft and sweet flavor to it that is a rare find in Oceanic foods; it is truly a personal favorite of mine! I commend you on a dish well done. Your final score is: 3.6!”

Keilly took up the mic again. “With that, we have our winner for round two: Gordon!”

~~~~~~~~~~
Round 3 is incoming, but enjoy your tossing this weekend, which has been increased! There are some other goodies to get in the tossing, that didn't make a very large release on their first go around, so heads up!
Final Dish in Round 2!
Posted: November 16, 2016
The audience waited anxiously. All were curious as to what would become of the events from earlier that day. Erika had shown up, her eyes tired and puffy. However, there was a renewed lighthearted energy to her movements that had been lacking in the past few days. Her determination was back in full force, and no malicious commentary was going to dissuade her from her goals now. As soon as Keilly gave her the go ahead, Erika sprinted off to her kitchen to get cooking immediately.
Keilly
Keilly nervously studied the remaining chefs. From her position, she couldn’t make out what they were saying. They appeared to be conversing in a civil manner; at least, that’s what Keilly hoped.
~~~~~~~~

“Ahem,” Gordon cleared his throat. “About before…”

“I saw what was marked in the book,” Clayton mumbled.

“Ah. So you understand now…?”

“Yeah. What I don’t get is why you went about it that way. It’s not your style.”

“I suppose it was because I did not wish to give the appearance of favoritism or pity. Still, you didn’t have to hit me. It’s no different from what you did, isn’t it?”

“What.” Clayton snapped back. “It is waaaay different.”

“Do tell,” Gordon pressed.

“First off, I didn’t know it was ‘well-intentioned’ at the time,” Clayton said, making air quotes at well-intentioned while rolling his eyes. “Second, it is a whole different level of jerkdom. Sure, I was a jerk, but I riled her up in a positive direction; I told her to get better and beat us. You, well… you went for flat out condemning her life’s work by failing in this competition.” Clayton almost playfully added as an afterthought, “You should stick with your usual snooty, indifferent level of jerkdom - that suits you best.”

“I see,” Gordon grumbled. “So, what about you? That was unusually cavalier of you to go running off like you did.”

“Feh,” Clayton huffed, turning away and lowering his ears back defensively. “Yeah, well… let’s just say it struck a personal chord with me. Don’t expect it again.”

“I see. Even tough guy Clayton has his soft spots, hmm?” Gordon said smugly.

“Tell anyone and I”ll rearrange your face.”

“You tried that already. My jaw is still a bit sore.” Gordon rubbed lightly at the side of his jaw.

*****
Erika emerged from the kitchen a short while later with a tray in hand. She brought it before Keilly and Daniel-san. “Interesting! What is it?” Daniel-san inquired.

Image

“This is Citrus Seaweed Pudding! It took a little guidance in the right direction, but I was able to deliver on my promise of a dessert-based dish, despite the challenging theme of seafood.” Erika beamed, relieved that she had something to present. “The seaweed is used as a thickener to create the right consistency for pudding, and the orange zest adds a subtle fruity flavor. It is served on a bed of seaweed in an oyster shell; this dish is appealing as it is tasty!”

”And the fish spoon?” Keilly noted.

“That,” Erika smirked, “Is to add some fun to the dish.”

Daniel-san gleefully dug in while Keilly pulled Erika aside. “So, what exactly happened before?”

“Auugh! Would you believe this competition just made me so angry, yet it was tearing me down inside!” Erika exclaimed, her emotional anguish apparent. “I wanted to do well, but I was starting to doubt my skills. Gordon’s comments and shoving the book at me just pushed me over the edge. I’m good now, though. Really!” Erika continued, overwhelming Keilly with her renewed enthusiasm. “We all lose our way sometimes, right? I was so focused on being the best, that I forgot to focus on what I love most - cooking, and bringing happiness to those who enjoy my food!”

“But what was the deal with that book?” Keilly puzzled.

“The book Gordon gave me covered the culture of a northern region, including their food. One of the things it talked about was how seaweed was used to make gelatin. Oh, but there wasn’t a recipe for it, so I hope that doesn’t count as cheating. I still had to research methods and devise my own from what I found independently.”

Keilly considered the situation. “I guess it’s okay, then. I’ll accept this dish as your own creation.” She smiled.

Round 2 Continues!
Posted: November 16, 2016

The chefs and judges gathered the following day, the whole competition process having become familiarly routine. Gordon started cooking right away, and before long, a pleasant aroma wafted out of the kitchen. He returned to the stage with a tray, on it a delightful fish entree.
Image
“This salmon is grilled on a cider-soaked cedar plank, and glazed with a maple syrup mixture that is sure to thrill any who enjoy the sweet flavors of autumn,” Gordon announced proudly. He stepped back towards the chefs’ seating area as Keilly and Daniel-san praised the visual presentation and started to sample with delicate bites.

Gordon looked to the other two chefs. They both had their eyes on the judges, but it was clear that while Clayton was focused on the proceedings, Erika’s mind was elsewhere. Gordon sighed inwardly. He had something in mind, but it was not a role he looked forward to playing.

“Your frustration is evident on your face,” Gordon commented to Erika, standing before her. “I suspect you haven’t figured out what your dish will be yet? Well, no matter,” Gordon reached for the bag he had left at his chair and pulled out a book. “Since you’re apparently giving in to defeat, I found a nice book for you. A few stories in there describe some lovely, cold and isolated islands that you might wish to move to when you shutter your bakery in embarrassment from losing. The culture there is fascinating, yet simple in some aspects. It’ll be good for a change of pace when you abandon your life here.” Gordon shoved the book into Erika’s hands as she reeled in shock. Erika bit her lip, holding back tears of frustration and pain. Words failed her as she struggled to comprehend Gordon’s intentions.

“You. Heartless. Dog,” Clayton seethed at Gordon, standing up. “Where in your right, wretched mind did you decide that was an okay thing to say to her?!” Clayton grabbed Gordon by his chef coat’s collar and pulled him close, snarling. “I should rearrange your -- Erika, wait!” Clayton broke off from threatening Gordon as Erika pushed between the two and ran off.

“It was for her own good,” Gordon managed to utter with an air of indifference.

BAM! Clayton’s fist met with Gordon’s jaw. The blow was weak since Erika’s departure had put too much distance between them, but it would still hurt enough to bruise a little. Clayton stepped back, glaring at Gordon, then took off after Erika. Keilly, breaking out of onlooker shock and realizing she should intervene, hurried over by Gordon a bit too late as Clayton was already gone. With a distasteful look, she helped Gordon back to his kitchen to get ice for his jaw, as well as to have a private word with him.

Daniel-san was left standing behind the judging table, unsure of what to do. “Um… We’ll resume judging soon, please calm down,” he attempted to talk to the roiling audience, his quiet pleas drowning in the angry noise.

*****

Erika slammed the door of her bakery shut behind her. Realizing she was still holding the book that Gordon had forced on her, she pitched it across the room where it slammed into the wall and fell open on the floor. Erika also sunk to the floor, unable to hold back her tears any longer.

The bakery door opened again, with a gentleness that was uncharacteristic for the one behind it. “We knew he was an arrogant jerk from the start, but even he should know that’s going too far,” Clayton spoke softly, with subdued anger in his voice. “Don’t let him get to you.” He held out his paw to help Erika to her feet. Erika wiped her tears, looking away from Clayton.

He followed her gaze, discovering the book. “Here, let me remove this trash for you,” Clayton strode over to the book, then hesitated, eyes focused on the open page. It was heavily dog-eared, bookmarked with a scrap of paper, and a section of text stood out in yellow highlighting.

Clayton picked up the book and gently returned it to Erika, saying, “He was right, this is for your own good. But!” He cut in before she could reply. “But not in the way that you think it is.” Clayton gave a sly smile. “It turns out he’s a conscientious, arrogant jerk.” The Haruba turned and left without another word.

*****
Keilly
Somehow Keilly managed to calm the angry mob that was the audience. She assured them that the matter at hand was dealt with, and all would be well. Things got a bit rowdy when Clayton appeared again, yet nothing came of it when he rejoined Gordon on stage. It seemed that they had come to an understanding, although most everyone was baffled as to the sudden change in attitude.

“Clayton,” Keilly addressed, “You caught up with Erika, correct? Will she be rejoining us?”

“Tonight,” Clayton responded. “She has some reading to do right now.”

Round 2!
Posted: November 14, 2016

A brisk chill hung in the morning air, yet it was not enough to deter Mistica's residents from gathering for the next round of the food fest showdown. The competitors were already up on the stage; one was lounging comfortably, while the other two matched the weather with equally cold temperaments.

"Erika, you're awesome! You can do it!" A stray voice rang out from the crowd.

At the callout, Gordon glanced out of the corner of his eye at the Tarinooki beside him. She barely acknowledged the shout, staring down at her feet and exhaling sharply. Gordon felt a tinge of guilt, realizing that his intended light-hearted comments, and the competition with the previous day's loss, had hurt her deeply. The sheer frustration with trying to prove one's worth -- and failing to do so -- would explain why her temper had been so unusually volatile in recent days. Gordon awkwardly reached over and gave her a cold-yet-reassuring pat on the shoulder. Erika turned to Gordon, returning a half-smile at the unsure gesture.

"Heh heh," Clayton chuckled, watching. "You two having a pity party?"

Gordon and Erika's faces soured at the comment as they both turned to face Clayton.

"Don't get too cocky," Gordon reprimanded Clayton. "That was only round one."

"Yeah!" Erika chimed in.

"What's this, you guys are siding against me now?" Clayton frowned. "Erika, I thought at least you'd be happy since I knocked this guy off his high pedestal. Taking the loss a bit hard, are we?"

Temper flaring, Erika snapped back at Clayton. "Of course! I placed dead last! I pride myself on making the best pastries and desserts around, and yet I got the worst rating!"

"Eh, quit your whining," Clayton bluntly replied. "So you feel you failed? Don't toss in the towel. Show us you can do better," Clayton challenged. "You think desserts are your thing? Then keep making desserts with each dish, and beat us with 'em." He reached over and tousled her hair, much like an obnoxious big brother would do.

"Fine!" Erika shoved his paw away and fixed her hair. "I'll make the best desserts ever, and surpass both of you!"

"Now you're talking," Clayton grinned widely, baring his fangs. "It's no fun for me to win this if my opponents aren't fired up."

Gordon rolled his eyes and feigned disinterest, but was glad to see that Clayton's rude pep talk was doing some good for Erika's spirit.
Keilly
"Sorry for the wait, everybody!" Keilly's voice echoed, breaking the three chefs from their private conversation. "Our next judge's ship was a bit late getting in!" Keilly hurried up the stage steps, then stepped back to allow an Oceanic Haruba up. "May I introduce Daniel-san as the guest judge for round two!"

"Hello, and thank you!" Daniel-san called out. "Chefs, as you may know, I favor food fresh from the oceans of Mistica. Therefore, round two's theme will be seafood! Clayton, I believe you are first up for cooking this round, so get to it! I'm eager to see what you have in store for us!"

"You got it!" Clayton casually strolled to his kitchen, ready to get cooking.

Erika, on the other hand, had her fiery spirit dissipate instantly upon hearing the theme. "How can I possibly make a dessert out of seafood!?"

*****

A short while later, Clayton returned, beaming while presenting his dish to the judges.

Image

"Fried Calamari is a simple yet classic dish, popular as an appetizer. Served with a delightful dipping sauce and lemon wedges, how could you go wrong?" Clayton said.

"..... Of course you went with a dish that involves tentacles," Gordon disapprovingly noted.

The Results!
Posted: November 12, 2016

Keilly
Gordon, Clayton, and Erika stood by as Keilly called for the audience to hush down. Everyone was eager to hear of the results for the first round of the competition, and there was a solid turnout of pets for of it. "Chefs, please join us at judging table," Keilly called out to the three competitors. As they walked over, Keilly stated to the audience, "Kandie will proceed with the judging now," and turned the microphone in the Nokwi 's direction.

"Thank you, Keilly, and thank you to our participants for sharing their talents with us," Kandie started cheerfully. "Also, thank you to everybody who has shown up in support of these great chefs!" The audience gave a quick cheer in reply. Kandie continued, "I will start by giving each chef a review of their dish. Gordon, please step forward." Gordon obliged.

"You presented us with the Decadent Chocolate Cake. In doing so, you set the bar high for the start of the competition." The corners of Gordon's mouth turned up, clearly agreeing with Kandie's review. She added, "Keilly and I were delighted with the exquisite flavors present; the sweet fruit of the raspberry layer blended superbly with the sweet-yet-slightly-bitter dark chocolate. An excellent first dish! The score on your dish is 4.08." The audience whooped and applauded.

Erika stepped forward at Kandie's urging. A smile upon her face with grim determination in her eyes.
"Your exquisite Chocolate Treat Tower was a joy to behold. It was expertly crafted, and each bite more delicious than the last. Quite a challenge in the time allotted, however it seems that so many choices confused some of our tastebuds. Perhaps you should try to edit your choices for a more harmonious plate in the future. The score on your dish is 3.92!"
Dismayed, and in a bit of shock, Erika slid back to her place; seemingly dazed at the turn of events.

"Please step forward Clayton!  Your dish was superbly fashioned. The care you took was evident in every bit of your Chocolate sculpture of the Adra. The chocolate was smooth, and rich; without being overly sweet. Your score is 4.13!  And with this, you win this round of the competition!"

Kandie turned to face the crowd that had gathered. "Thank you all for coming, with an outstanding score, Clayton wins this round of the competition!"

Gordon now looked the same as Erika had a moment before, realizing he had missed out by a small fraction from dominating the competition from the start. Resolutely, he refused to put on a spectacle and icily congratulated Clayton on his win.  On his way out of the area, he refused to take a miniature chocolate Adra with him. He was lost in his own ideas for what could help him in the next round; whatever it may be.

Erika had found her voice, and was utilizing it. "Edit? I need to edit my dessert choices? How in the world could I have lost out on this round with my skills? I demand a recount!"

Clayton basked in the milling crowd, continuing to hand out miniature Adra chocolates to all who wished to try while the larger sculpture remained on display.

Anticipation...
Posted: November 10, 2016

Keilly rested her chin on her paw while leaning on the table, her face displaying a blank gaze as her thoughts wandered. Conversation had died down among the pets that had gathered, and she had run out of talking points. Clayton hadn’t even given her the chance to run through a competition recap that morning; rather, he had shut the door of Spooky Creations in her face when she tried to ask him about his confidence in the day's challenge. Perhaps show host & foodie judge was not meant to be a second career for her. …She was enjoying the perks of free food, though.

Kandie interrupted her thoughts. “I’m back from taking a stretch. Any word yet?”

“Not yet,” Keilly sighed and slumped over on the table. “This wait is killing me. He sure is taking his time. Maybe… do you think he’s blowing the whole challenge off?” Keilly sat upright at the sudden thought.

“He might be temperamental enough for that,” Kandie contemplated while hopping up on her seat, “But I don’t think he’s the kind to willingly walk away from a challenge. He was pretty sure of what his submission would be yesterday.”

“Yeah,” Keilly’s mind wandered back to earlier conversation. “I still want to know what he could make that is six feet long. A chocolate sub sandwich? Mistmas yule log? Not quite the right season yet… Maybe a chocolate glazed trunk of Ele—“ Erika trailed off mid-word as the audience started cheering. She followed their gaze towards the now-open door of Spooky Creations.

Clayton walked straight to the crowd, gave them a quick look-over, then without explanation instructed several of them to follow him. A few compliant pets broke from the crowd and entered Spooky Creations behind the Haruba. Everyone outside waited and watched the doorway, listening to the shouts of directions and a few cusses when orders were not followed precisely. Ever so slowly, Clayton’s submission inched its way out of the shop with painstaking care. At his commands, the crowd volunteers gradually maneuvered it up to the stage, where it barely fit across the length of the table.

Kandie chirped in delight, and Keilly stood dumbstruck. Clayton came through on his promise: Before them, the dragon crafted in solid chocolate was an impressive sight at six feet long.

Image
The ingredients aren’t complicated - it’s delicious dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate - but this dessert is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. It almost looks too good to eat. …Almost.

“Heh,” Clayton smirked, taking in all of the stunned expressions and cheers. “My Chocolate Adra Sculpture can win this, no problem. Feel free to declare me the winner now, judges.” Clayton sat back comfortably in his designated chair.

"Keilly? Are you okay?" Kandie questioned of the Cheran, noting she had not stopped staring at the sculpture or picked up the mic yet.

"Yes," Keilly replied. "But I think one of these rounds will have to be on diet foods; that much chocolate is going straight to my hips."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clayton’s dragon is a bit too large to hand out, so it’s a good thing he cast some miniatures to share. The Chocolate Adra Sculpture has been added to faction tossing!
(faction tossing has been updated as well, so there's tons of opportunity for tossing, Enjoy!)
Delicious!
Posted: November 9, 2016
Erika awoke the following morning, slowly sitting up in bed. Sunlight was streaming in through her windows, the birds were singing, the microphone was screeching with feedback…
Erika quickly rubbed the sleep from her eyes, recalling the events of the previous day. From her bedroom window, she could see the portable stage and several pets setting up equipment next to her bakery. Pushing aside the question of ‘what connections does Keilly have to get this competition up and running so quickly,’ Erika hopped out of bed and set herself on preparing for the day. Chocolate was a great theme for her, and she had several recipes in mind that she was having trouble deciding upon. If she couldn’t pick just one, maybe… Could she use all of them? Erika smiled, her vision for her culinary creation becoming clear.
*****
Kandie and Keilly chatted a bit with the pets that had gathered, as well as with passerby. Word was getting around that a competition was being held, so a good number of curious and inquisitive faces had stopped there to see what was taking place. Gordon and Clayton were also sitting up on the stage and back from the crowd, pointedly not looking at or talking to each other.
“Ah-hem.” Appearing in the bakery doorway, Erika cleared her throat to draw attention.
Keilly
“Oh!” It seems our contestant has completed her task!” Keilly quickly dove back into the show host gig. “What have you prepared for us today?”
Erika momentarily disappeared inside, then walked out again pushing a food cart. Keilly’s eager grin quickly turned into a jaw drop. “Wow! Color me surprised, there’s a full selection of delicious looking delectables there!”
Gordon and Clayton watched with raised brows as Erika stopped at the stage steps and very carefully lifted her submission to carry up the steps. The audience hushed, and a few pets watching held their breath as Erika slowly made her way to the table, finally setting down a tiered tower of various chocolatey foods.
“Well!” Keilly exclaimed. “I’d say that was a fine example of a cake walk, but it seems we have more than just cake! Is there anything you’d like to tell us about this two-foot tower of goodies, Erika?”
“Of course!” Erika beamed. This is the Chocolate Treat Tower!”
Image
An assortment of chocolate goodies presented on a fun tiered party platter, your taste buds are sure to find something satisfying. Which one suits your preference: the chocolate coated cake pops, dipped strawberries, milk- and dark-chocolate crinkle cups with berries, chocolate truffles, or the mini fudge brownie cakes with curled chocolate shavings?
While Keilly and Kandie sampled from the tower of treats, Erika turned her attention to Gordon. “Each piece even satisfies your gourmet scale rule, Mr. “Food Should Be Prepared In Proper Tiny Portion Sizes To Be Cuisine,” Erika boasted. “Although I provided more food overall, so my customers don’t go home on a half-empty stomach. Looks like this ‘common baker’ is a worthwhile chef after all, hmm?” Grinning with delight, she added, “I’ll also be sending some with my followers to share, so they can make it perfectly clear who’s the best.”
Gordon’s only response was to turn his head away and nose up as if it were beneath him to respond to such remarks. Clayton sulked a bit, then stood up and approached Erika and the judge's table. He eyed the tower, then declared, “Your dish may stand tall at two feet, but mine will be six feet.” He turned and started to head for the stage steps.
“Oh! Err… I hope that doesn’t mean you’re chocolate-coating insects,” Erika responded, holding a paw to her mouth at the thought.
“What?! No!” Clayton whirled around, almost miffed at that suggestion being a horrible choice. “Not -will have six feet-, Six feet long!” He turned again and stomped off.
“Sounds *munch* interesting, and I look *munch chew* forward to *chomp* your dish tomorrow!” Keilly managed to sound out between bites. “Thank you to *nom* everyone for stopping by today!”
“Keilly, dear,” Kandie pleaded, “Please leave some for me to judge.”
Let's Get Ready!
Posted: November 8, 2016
Erika, Gordon, and Clayton collectively stared at the scene. Whatever they were expecting, this was not it. A group of pets were mulling around in front of a portable stage, where Keilly was checking a microphone with an audio tech-savvy Jumboyo. A small table stood in the center of the stage, and shopkeeper Kandie was seated behind it. Satisfied with the working mic, Keilly looked up and around, finally spotting the three chefs. She smiled and waved, then motioned that they should come up and join her.
Keilly
As the three walked up the steps to the stage, Keilly started talking into the mic so everyone in the woods could hear loud and clear.
“Welcome to the graaaand Food Fest Showdown! I, Keilly, will be your host for this wonderful event!”
“And what exactly is this ‘event’?” Clayton snapped.
“Work with me on this, will you?” Keilly said hushed, then returning to the mic. “Let’s show some excitement, make some noise, audience!” She called out, gesturing towards the gathering of pets that had taken interest and drawn closer. A few started clapping, getting caught up in the energy.
“This event will determine who the best chef is here- nay, in all of Mistica! This is the Best Chef Competition!”
Erika gasped. “You mean—?”
“Thaaaat’s right, ladies and gentlemen and pets of all ages,” Keilly continued, caught up in her energetic delivery, “These three will be competing to determine who is the best chef!”
“I did not agree to this,” Gordon contested.
“But Gordon,” Keilly responded, “Anyone with the title of best anything will have to prove it to challengers sooner or later. Now’s your opportunity to show everyone here that the article was correct!”
“Hhmph. I shouldn’t need to prove it, but very well.” Gordon frowned. “What are the rules of this competition?”
“Why, I’m sooo glad you asked, Gordon!” Keilly said, turning to the audience. “This competition will feature several rounds where you must come up with a dish according to that round’s theme. With each round, there will be a guest judge. Round One’s judge is none other than… Kandie!”
Kandie stood up and took a quick bow upon mention of her name, and the audience clapped.
“Kandie and I have determined the theme of the first round to be: Chocolate!” Keilly continued. Gordon, as you are defending the title of best chef in Mistica, you will be going first. You may have a day to come up with and make your chocolate themed dish. Then tomorrow we will have Erika come —“
“I won’t need a full day to come up with a dish,” Gordon rudely interrupted. “Is that all I need to know, or may I start now?”
“I, ah… I guess you can start now?” Keilly was at a loss for words momentarily, while Gordon walked off to Mistica Cuisine next to the stage. “Well, let’s see what Gordon has in store for us!”
*****
After a few hours, Gordon came out with a covered tray and presented it in front of Keilly and Kandie. Lifting the cover up, he smiled, quite pleased with himself, and said, “May I present you with the Decadent Raspberry Chocolate Cake.
Image
“A small but delightful dish that pleases the palette with a blend of chocolates, and with a touch of raspberry filling to complement the spongy chocolate cake interior. It is topped with a fine drizzle of dark chocolate and powdered confectioner’s sugar.”
“And,” Gordon continued smugly, “I have more of it for my followers to take and judge for themselves — and perhaps hand out to others to show them how fantastic my food is.”
“What?” Clayton hollered out. “Can he do that?” he asked of Keilly. Keilly shrugged. “I don’t see why not.”
“But we don’t have our dishes to share yet.” Erika protested. “Fine, he wants to play that way? What do I have to give out…” She rummaged through her belongings. “I’ll do the same when I get to present my dish, but for the meantime, my followers can… ah…” she grabbed a lollipop out of her bag. “Can toss this leftover lanturnacht candy in the faces of Gordon’s followers!”
“Oh dear,” Kandie spoke to Keilly. “Are you going to let things continue this way?”
“Mmm,” Keilly swallowed her bite of cake, “That’s up to them. This is good cake.” She took another forkful. “It was headed that way anyhow; how many times have they competed this year? Anyways, it’ll work out.”
“I hope so,” Kandie replied, watching the competing chefs with concern.
THWAP!
Posted: November 7, 2016
Erika barely flinched at the sudden noise from outside, making sure not to drop the tray of cupcakes she had pulled from the oven. She gently set the tray down on a cooling rack as the Village Bakery door swung open. A somewhat stunned Phelocan limped in.
"Hello, Maury," Erika called out across the room while barely glancing up. "Came in too high on the landing again? You didn't hurt yourself this time, did you?" Erika added, noting the Phelocan's limping.
"It's minor, I'll shake it off in a moment," Maury replied. "Of course, a delicious cupcake would help make me feel better.” He eyed the tray of fresh cupcakes and did his best impression of puppy dog eyes.
Looking up, Erika grinned and playfully responded. "A cupcake? I'm not sure I could part with any of these fantastic cupcakes... Although.... if you've brought something special for me, I might be able to give up one," she said, waving nonchalantly.
"Well, it's my lucky day, then!" Maury grinned back, reaching into his messenger bag. “Let’s see… a bill or two, some junk mail… ah, a copy of the next Food Fest magazine!”
“Oh, great! I wonder what holiday treats they’ve reviewed, and what’s popular this year. I could use ideas for a new recipe to draw in a few more customers.” Erika reached out for the mail. Maury brought the mail forward but hesitated before Erika could grasp it.
“Great enough for a cupcake?” Maury asked.
Erika giggled. “Yes, you silly bird. Take any you want; they should be cool enough to handle now.”
Erika set the bills and junk mail aside and proceeded to flip through the magazine. Maury gleefully picked out a sprinkle-covered cupcake. Seeing Erika so engrossed in the magazine, he whispered a soft “Thank you,” and decided it best to slip out quietly rather than bother her.
“Hey, they’ve got a new column running!” Erika spoke out loud, perhaps not aware that Maury had taken his leave. “Looks like they’re reviewing eateries around Mistic…” Erika skimmed the article, then did a double-take, reading the passage more thoroughly. Her brow furled and she scrunched up her face, visibly upset. “Gordon said WHAT?!”
*****
Clayton was equally bent up over the contents of the column and was going to make sure he set things straight. “If he thinks that he can claim that he’s the best chef around, he’s got another thing coming!” He rapped hard on the door of Mistica Cuisine, then thought better of it and tried the door knob - unlocked. Clayton barged inside through the doorway, startling a few waiters who were setting up tables for the evening. “Where’s Gordon?” Clayton called out to them.
“In the kitchen, where any master chef should be,” came a happy reply from the back of the restaurant. Gordon walked into the main dining room and approached Clayton, glancing at the crumpled up magazine in Clayton’s paw. “Oh, I see you’ve got your copy of the article already, no need for me to share the good news then.”
“You are no master chef, Gordon, and if you think that—“ Clayton started.
“I’m sorry you feel that way,” startled, Gordon cut him off. “However, if you feel the need to contest that, please, let’s step outside to talk. Gentlemen,” he called to his waiters, “If you have need of me, I will be outside.”
Clayton and Gordon stepped out of the restaurant into the small clearing in the wood that served as the center of Darkwood Hollow. Before had they moved five paces, Erika stormed over, heading straight for Gordon. “Just who do you think you are, claiming you’re the best chef in all of Mistica?”
Gordon sighed, obviously dismayed that the others did not celebrate his newly appointed title.
“If you are so upset with the article, shouldn’t you two storm the magazine publication headquarters instead, then?” Gordon said. “They were the ones who made the claim, after all. But I digress, I do agree with their opinion on the matter.”
“Still, the direct quotes from YOU in the interview were unnecessary!” Erika cried out. “Your ‘wonderful cuisine can top any common baker’s fare, or —“
“— swamp folk food; if you can call it food, at all.' ” Clayton filled in, snarling a bit.
“I’m sorry, but soup with eyeballs is more of a tragedy than a specialty,” Gordon said with disdain. “At least Erika creates food that is edible, even if it isn’t fine cuisine.”
“Excuse me?!” Clayton raged. “Erika, you’re sensible, right? Tell this guy that my food is great!”
“I…” Erika hesitated. “I can’t really say I find severed limbs all that… appetizing?” She said, grimacing at the thought of some of Clayton’s more specialized dishes.
Clayton boiled over. “That’s it! You two just don’t have any appreciation for my food, but I’ve got a good customer base that loves it! I’m a better chef than either of you!”
“A customer base with no taste,” Gordon muttered under his breath.
“Now wait a minute! That’s not—“ Erika’s retort was cut off as they were interrupted.
Keilly
“Um… pardon me?” Keilly appeared between the three. “I’ve just come from visiting Pandoria, and I couldn’t help but hear your bickering. Rather, I should put it; everyone could hear the commotion you’re making.” The trio of trouble glanced around and noted that they had drawn a fair amount of attention. “Please calm your tempers, then tell me, what exactly is going on here?”
Clayton, Gordon, and Erika each explained in turn about the article and the comments made on their cooking abilities. Keilly quietly listened to each as they huffed about the other two. After all was said, Keilly pondered for a minute while the trio waited for her to set the record straight - in their favor, or course. Finally, she looked each of them in the eyes and said, “I know how to prove who’s best. I need to attend to a few things first, but please meet me back here outside Mistica Cuisine this time tomorrow.” Keilly then darted off before they could reply.
Puzzled at Keilly’s actions, the three resigned to the temporary impasse. They quietly parted ways, but all three would definitely be back to show that they were the better chef.
Chamber Closes!
Posted: November 3, 2016
Closing the chamber was exhausting. Not only were last-minute customers trying to extract every last gift from within the maze, but the creatures inside were trying to escape again. He leaned as hard as he could against the door.
“Imposter!”
“Faker!” Oh great, Ghost joined in. Jasper grunted, vision going hazy as he felt the doors shudder behind him. Wait a minute… He blinked, only to find everything growing dark and hoofbeats approaching him… Barely a thought crossed his mind before he slumped to the ground.
---
“The circus is closed, get out! No, you can’t go back and get more popcorn!” Albrecht yelled, pointing at the last group of Misticans. The group began to walk away, staring sadly at the only working popcorn stand that wasn’t infested with lanturats. Gregory growled down at Albrecht, mumbling under his breath. A snort nearby caught his attention. On a box, lounging as if he owned the place, was Robin.
“You know, that was a bit rude. Sure Lanturanacht is over, but let them have some fun!” The Jasper imposter glared. He was tired of this charade, so tired… He was suddenly exhausted; everything was growing dark…
A thunderous noise jolted him out of the foreign state, a graveyard replacing the swamp. Albrecht shuddered. The sliver of the moon above lit the gravestones around him. A shadowy being appeared behind him a ghostly whinny making his hair stand on end. Albrecht shrieked.
He ran as fast as he could, barely registering that he was in his own body. A second shriek echoed his own and something black raced past him. Jasper? He stumbled, preparing for a hard landing on the ground but he kept falling… and falling.
Jasper jolted away with a gasp, nearly falling as he scrambled to his feet. Quickly, looking for that spectral shyre he had seen, all that met his eyes was Gregory, who was lying on the ground with a moody look, and…. Robin. Wait! The circus owner looked down at his hands, almost laughing with relief. He was him again, which meant Albrecht was back at the Chamber and… Jasper turned to the person whose gift had been to blame for this entire thing.
“You.”
“Me?” Silence fell over them, Robin looking quite perplexed as a now exhausted looking Jasper pushed past him, wings drooping.
“Just go and get that mirror and lock it up in my tent. This season has been way too much trouble than it was worth… And,” Jasper pointed his claw at him, pausing at his door. “I don’t want any more gifts from you, understand it?”
It was time for Jasper to enjoy his circus for the time he had left this year.
---
The chamber is now closed! The circus is open through Sunday, so be sure to turn in your candy and spend your points!
Autumn Sunshine
Posted: November 1, 2016
With the autumn storms already in full force over the lands of Mistica, a day of full sunshine was rare.
Pandoria took advantage of such a day, and traveled the roads of Darkwood Hollow, enjoying the sunshine. She happened upon a little Vix, her arms full of bright and cherry marigold blossoms. With a twinkle in her eye, she offered several magnificent blooms to Pandoria.
"For remembrance my fair lady. To remember the sunshine during the darkest storm, and to know that even when grief overwhelms us; there will always be sunshine to come and dry our tears."
With such a pretty speech, Pandoria gave an offering of her own as she collected the marigold blooms.
Introducing the Blessed Marigold Vix!
This month, in honor of our anniversary, there will be no limit to these Graces. The amount will also be lowered to $25 for obtaining a Grace as a gift with purchase during November in celebration.
