The first sign of the most beautiful and memorable time of the year is snow.
Mistmas portrays itself to me as a time to remember that there are millions of other people on this earth; those with us and those who have passed. It isn’t just a day when we think about giving. It’s a day when love is remembered and shared throughout the entire community and world.
Last year on this wonderful site, I was barely here for a month. I had no friends or association with much of the community. Before I knew it, I kept getting gifts from the most unexpected people. The presents weren’t the fanciest , but they were the most precious things I had collected because they came from someone else.
In real life, I volunteered in a soup kitchen for my city. I love doing volunteer work year-round, but this time just seemed different to me. Even the homeless and the poor seemed to be just as joyful as any wealthy person I knew. Every time I gave someone their holiday dinner, I saw the sparkle in their eyes that just gave me the warmest feeling in my heart. One particular part of this event that I remembered was a little boy, about four or five years old. As I handed out what they needed, the little boy handed me something back. It was a paper cutout gingerbread man that he had colored on a plain sheet of paper. Almost immediately, I thought that day was actually the only thing I ever needed as a present for the rest of my life.
Mistmas means giving a piece of you to others who may not be as fortunate as you. It’s a day to think about each and every blessing you have been given, and show appreciation for them.
There are never enough or the right words to describe this time of year. It’s more of a magical time. That’s the best way to describe it. A time of miracles and love.
“Someone can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone” is a quote that makes me think of this time of year as soon as I hear it.
Mistmas shouldn’t be about what present you’re going to unwrap, or how fancy you can decorate your Mistmas tree. It should be about how you can do something for someone else, even if you aren’t giving them a physical object. The best gift you can give yourself is the one of knowing you can make a difference and put a smile on someone else’s face. That is what Mistmas means to me.
