Digging for Treasure
Written By Crimsonxlust

I knew that something had happened the moment Memento came running in. Well, running as fast as a zombie could, anyways. He seemed rather excited, flailing his arms and nudging me, but, I couldn't understand what the cause of this excitement was. After a few moments of this, he got impatient and just grabbed me and yanked me into the other room. I yelped in surprise, and then saw what Memento had gotten excited over. He was pointing at the TV. Or, I suppose, he was pointing more towards what was on the TV.

At first, I couldn't really understand what I was seeing. It all just looked like a bunch of endless sand. In fact, I had never seen so much sand in my life. However, I began to make out dark shapes then. It looked like... other people? Why would anyone want to visit such a warm looking place, anyways? Memento obviously saw something I didn't, and, noticing my lack of excitement, he pointed at the screen. It was then that I noticed the shovels, and began actually listening to what the news announcer was saying. .. Digging? The place was called the Itzair Ruins, and apparently archaeologists had made an amazing discovery. According to them, many years ago, ancient people had discarded unwanted items in the endless sands. They then would dig up items, with the potential to unearth treasures beyond their wildest dreams. And, it was still working even today, people simply hadn't discovered it for a very long period of time.

I could tell that Memento was eager to go. He looked at me as if to say, "Come on, Riot, let's go dig some stuff up! Maybe we'll find some really cool item or something!" I didn't share his anticipation. I was thinking about what some people might consider 'unwanted', and I shivered. I sure didn't want to dig up some dead kitten that somebody had abandoned. Memento obviously didn't see the potential issues, because he pulled at my arms and stared at me with that one, pleading eye of his. It's almost impossible to resist that cute, blood, zombie face when Memento really wants something, and, I had to give in. (After all, this was better than the time when he wanted to eat somebody's arm. I didn't want to allow that, no matter how cute he looked.)

So, that was how I found myself packing a few things that were just lying around and being useless into a couple of bags. I refused to take any pals, though. The poor things didn't need to be buried alive, and, I was pretty sure that there was some cruelty law that was either already in place or going to be in place that outlawed such a thing. In all, I took some Pommes, a few beanbags and plushies, and a weird looking rainbow colored envelope. I hope that whoever digs the Pommes up doesn't really mind the fact that they'll taste a bit gritty. (I also hope they don't get freaked out by the Withered one we took. That thing kept staring at me, I was too afraid to even try to eat it.)

We set out early in the morning towards the Ruins. There were many other people who obviously had the same plan as us, which I was grateful for. (I had no idea how to get to the ruins myself.) Granted, some people did stare at us oddly. Well, Memento more so than me. I suppose most people aren't comfortable around walking corpses, though, I can't really see why. Memento's perfectly harmless. Usually, anyways.

Anyways, after a few hours, we finally arrived at the Ruins. There were countless people there; people were being forced to only dig once every hour or so, in order to allow other people to be able to dig. We buried our 'junk' items first. Those beanbags and Pommes were actually pretty heavy, I was glad to have an empty bag on my shoulders. Then, we waited until we had the chance to dig.

It felt like forever, but, eventually we found ourselves with two shovels and a few piles of sand in front of us. Memento dug first. He found some poor little Znake, but, I think that it may have actually lived there. Whatever the case, it did not seem very happy to be dug up, and it showed its displeasure by sinking its fangs into Memento's arm. I suppose it's good that Memento can't die again, because I don't know if that particular species of Znake is venomous or not. I was just happy the little reptile wasn't dead from lack of air. Memento didn't really seem too fond of it, so, I think we're going to give it away or set it free before we go back home.

It was my turn to dig then, and, I was a little bit nervous. I hoped that whatever I dug up didn't want to eat me. I dug down, until I felt my shovel strike something, and I heard a muffled 'oof!'. I stopped, leaning down and peering into the hole I had dug. A pair of bright eyes blinked up at me, looking frightened and almost sad. I reached down to gently grab whatever I had unearthed. I pulled up a small, white furred kitten. She looked terrified, all covered in sand and such, and pressed against me as I hugged her. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the rainbow patterns that seemed to move along her fur. She mesmerized me, and I was glad that I had found her. We had to move on and allow other people to dig, but, I was beginning to feel glad that we came.

We went back a few more times, and uncovered a few more things, but, nothing too exciting. However, I have decided that there are indeed treasures here. Not only did we find my new pet, whom I have affectionately dubbed Creativity due to the fact that she looks almost like somebody painted her, but, while we were there, a miraculous discovery was made. I heard a shout of amazement from somebody nearby, and turned to see them proudly hoisting an odd looking box. Despite the arid heat of the desert, there was /snow/ on the box, and a beautiful blue ribbon was wrapped around it. But, what was truly amazing was the power felt from the box. I could feel an odd feeling of change coming from within its depths, and it looked incredibly valuable. It was only later that I discovered that this was a legendary Pandoria Box, one of many, which had the power to change who you were. It was amazing that such a thing could be created, even if it was a bit creepy. Pandoria herself had put magic into it, and, it seemed like everyone wanted one.

We had to leave soon after that. I'm writing this at home, and Creativity is playing with Memento's pet Kobacha. However, I have discovered one thing about the recent trip. Treasure is everywhere in those Ruins, just waiting to be dug up. I can only wait to see what discoveries other people make in the coming days. What other dreams will be fulfilled by the desert sands? How many people will find joy from others' generous donations?
