Behind the Mirror Pt 5
Written By Xeiana

That breathing from before… It sent shivers down his spine, wings quivering against his back. Kaida felt small, too vulnerable now that his best pal Flicker was gone. She had always been a constant in his life since that fateful day he met her in the forest. He even had saved her from falling off a hidden cliff too! Already he found himself stepping backwards, not wanting to go into that huge cave, but the crumbling one was even more terrifying. The aspect of being buried alive… He gulped, the sound echoing loudly through the cave. Yelping at that he darted into the mouth of the cave, only to hear the other tunnel collapse in on himself.

Thank goodness he hadn’t chose that one!

It was dark, too dark, when he continued down the path laid before him. There was no glowing moss to help light the area so he had to rely on his other senses, letting out a yip to get a feel for the area ahead of him. It wouldn’t do to hit his head by walking straight into a wall! A sinking feeling began to squeeze his chest. Although from the outside the tunnel had looked large, but further in it began to get narrower. Kaida’s ears immediately flattened against his skull.

“Flicker…” he whimpered, trying to make himself as small as possible while walking. It was eerily silent, there was no water dripping, nothing except for the soft thuds of his feet and his occasional yip to figure out where to go.

“Kaaiiiiidddaaaaaa.”

Kaida froze, eyes widening. A whimper spilled from his lips even though he tried to stop it. Glancing wildly around, the Braenon tried to squint in order to see who was calling his name. Was there someone else down there with him? Who?

“Kaiiidaaaaa!”

It was more urgent this time, louder, so loud it echoed painfully in the small tunnel. What was more terrifying was the fact it had come from behind him and… it sounded like his mother. His breath stilled in his chest as he turned around, knees shaking uncontrollably. There in the darkness, something moved. It was glowing slightly, like energy crackling around the form. Two long arms, like a spider began to drag itself forward, a mass of hair covering its face from view. It was too difficult to figure out what it was, the rest of its form lost in the darkness.

Its head, or whatever was underneath that hair, tilted upwards, the hair parting to reveal a massive maw filled with a long drooping purple tongue and rows of jagged teeth. It called his name again, voice distorting into strangled laughter that sent him running away.

That was not his mother!

Heart pounding, he slipped and skidded through the small tunnel, hitting his head and body several times when he was unable to know where he was going. He ran shoulder first into a fork in the road, and without looking, dove into the right path. His luck may have changed as whatever the thing was continued to follow him. There was light at the en

The glowing moss had returned in full force up ahead, yet he still skidded to a halt. The moss was clinging to the walls around him, but in front of him was a large crevice. On the other side, close enough to jump to if he tried to glide, was another tunnel. Fear flooded through him, reminding him of that cliff from before. He was scared of flying! The laughter sounded from behind him, making him skitter forward to the edge of the tunnel. Could he work through his fear and glide? Or should he find another way down?

Why, why did that thing sound like his mom?
