Character Spotlight: Mezeric
Written By gemajgall

Once upon a time, in a quiet village in Mistica, a draklaita was born. Unfortunately, not only was this draklaita blind, like the rest of his species, but his senses were dulled too. His ears could only pick up the loudest echolocation, so he could barely walk without bumping into things. In such a small village, it was rare to see anyone with a disability. Unfortunately, it meant that the young draklaita was constantly bullied and teased by his peers.

During these years of mocks and jeers, the young draklaita withdrew into himself. He let his imagination run wild; he began to imagine a world in which he could see. And that mental vision persisted; it would not go away. Soon, it became an all-consuming obsession. He sought out the skills of healers, the wisdom of the gurahdia, and the magic of the fey. Even unable to read, he memorized all the stories of miracles that every traveler told him.

Then, one day after a rather harsh round of bullying, the young draklaita left. He never once turned back toward his home village—he had a dream to fulfill. Of course, it was slow traveling. He had to constantly be wary about falling into a ravine or tripping into a river. Fortunately, other travelers and other towns were much more compassionate towards his plight. They all gave him, sometimes conflicting, advice.

His travels led him to Darkwood Hollow. However, the darkness held no fear for him. After all, he did not know darkness, nor did he know light. But he was soon to learn.

From the shadows, a voice beckoned him. The speaker promised a cure: it promised vision and hearing, senses more acute than any other, and strength and power—power to bring justice to all those who had tormented the young draklaita. The draklaita paused and pondered. After much internal deliberation, he figured he had nothing to lose and agreed to the speaker's request.

In that moment, nightmarish magic opened up a single eye on the draklaita's chest. Dark power surged down his legs, strengthening them. His horns turned black.

“Now, you are my warrior!” declared King Mephitic. “Henceforth, you shall be know as Mezeric. Your eye shall contain the magic to mesmerize my enemies, and your claws shall rip them to shreds! You will obey my commands, and people will fear the might I bestowed upon you!”

Mezeric's first vision was King Mephitic; the first sounds he clearly heard were the imp king's voice. And it did not please him. He had heard no good tales from travelers and knew well enough to avoid the imps. Mezeric snarled at Mephitic for deceiving him. He lunged, but in that moment, Mephitic raised his hand.

At once, Mezeric's body obeyed the imp. His claws retracted, his tense muscles relaxed. Mezeric could feel the imp king's will overriding his own. No matter how hard he struggled, he could not overcome the imp's magic. Obediently, he followed the imp into the shadows.

To this day, Mezeric struggles to break free of King Mephitic's control. But it has all been in vain. The draklaita has turned into one of his fiercest warriors, mutilating those who would oppose him. Now, travelers tell new tales. They tell of a draklaita who blindly accepted a deal in exchange for revenge and lost everything...
