Character Spotlight: Joel
Written By gemajgall

The large meeting room was filled with various representatives from places neighboring Mistica Kingdom. Even after very formal and very lengthy introductions, Prince Joel was having a hard time remembering everyone's names—and even more, their numerous titles. Political discussions had been going on for hours as they tried to hammer out the arrangements between the kingdom and the former ducheries.

It hadn't been easy reviving Mistica Kingdom, and it was proving to be just as difficult to reforge the alliances that existed before the war. The dukes and duchesses had just been too used to their own independence—if only Joel could convince them they were trying to usurp power.

Princess Alana gave him a reassuring smile as she took his hand underneath the table. He smiled back, more amazed by the day at her patience and peace-making abilities. All her training and education showed during times like this; Joel couldn't help but feel awkward next to her. But her faith in him was enough to keep trying.

As one marquess monologued, Joel glanced outside. At least the windows were open to let in the warm spring breeze. The scent of flowers crossed his nose. Joel felt a longing for dirt underneath his nails and grass stains on his knees. But not even the servants would let him weed and mulch in the garden as he used to.

At great length, it was time for the mid-morning break. Joel rose and stretched his stiff legs before slipping out of the room to go for a walk. He avoided people's eyes so no one would pull him aside. Within minutes, he was out in the garden. Warm sun shone on his skin while fresh air ruffled his hair.

Joel slowed his pace, taking in the sights of the spring blossoms: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and even some eranthis and scillas. They also seemed to be growing well and strong—and he tried not to be critical about the new gardener's choice of fertilizer. Before he knew it, his hands were stroking the petals.

Time got away from him. It wasn't until a worried Alana came looking for him that he even remembered about the conference.

“Here you are, Joel!” she sounded relieved. “Everyone wondered where you went.”

“I-I'm sorry,” Joel replied, abashed. In his arms was a large bouquet of blossoms he had gathered. “I just saw these...and they were so lovely and fragrant. They...reminded me of the most beautiful person I've ever met.” He looked her directly in the eyes. “For you. I love you.”

“Oh, Joel!” Alana gasped as she accepted them with tears of joy in her eyes.
