Pandoria's Favor, Part III
Written By Fay

Seht’s cackle rang in Pandoria’s ears as her growl turned into a scream of pain and she suddenly felt hard rock slam against her back. Panting, the goddess rose, her white eyes wide.

“Sssuch a weak ssstrike hasss no chance againssst Lysssithea!” Seht yelled. He slithered forward, bearing down on the shaking goddess with a sinister grin on his scaly face. The shard of Lysithea gleamed like a taunt in the sun’s dying light.

A deep sadness suddenly took hold of Pandoria’s heart. She had been ready to die, but now her entire creation would perish with her – millions of lives lost to Seht’s lust for chaos and destruction. If only Lysithea had remained whole…

And then, suddenly, Seht screamed.

Pandoria looked back but had to squint as light burned her eyes. Rae was on her knees, barely visible within a white-hot circle that was brighter than the sun in the dim sky. But where was the light coming from? Certainly not from the weak yellow circle above…

Then Rae stood and the light gathered in her clenched fists. Seht hissed and charged, but Rae screamed and threw the fiery orbs to smash into his head. He reeled back, for a moment shrouded by golden smoke, and then Pandoria had to drop her staff as it grew white-hot from Rae’s power. The gem was overloading and she felt her strength return as it was channeled back into her.

Unless Seht was hiding a whole armor made of Lysithea’s shards, he stood no chance. Pandoria rushed him as Rae’s fire struck again and landed a blow to his chest. White light exploded; within it, a rainbow of colors pulsed for a moment and then was gone.

Seht turned to flee and a cloud of violet and black surrounded him – the last of Lysithea’s power. In a second he was gone, and as if a curtain had been lifted, the quarry was bathed in warm sunlight.

But Rae was looking back, down the mountain from where the light that saved her had come from. Pandoria ran over, wondering if the source of it was still there, but what she saw brought no joy.

Rae hung her head. The rocky expanse was filled with fallen Lysadors. The ground around them was scorched black, as were most of their once magnificent frills.

“Lysadors can channel sunlight,” Pandoria explained. Her throat was suddenly very tight. She swallowed hard. “I think they overdid themselves. They used the last bit of sunlight to revive you and save us.”

“Are they all dead?” Rae asked in a horrified whisper.

Pandoria said nothing. She took Rae by the hand and the two goddesses disappeared from the quarry’s peak to reappear amidst the Lysadors. Pandoria felt only the faintest flicker of life in the poor creatures. The feeling led her to a normal Lysador who lifted his head to look at her, though the effort made him grimace.

Pandoria knelt beside him and put a comforting hand on his snout. “Rest,” she said softly, fighting back hot tears, “all of you will live again, when the time comes…I swear it. Today, you have saved us all.” As if he was just waiting for confirmation of the Lysador’s success, the dying creature nodded and breathed his last.
