Character Spotlight: Belladonna

Most know Belladonna as the jumboyo fortune teller who travels with Jasper and his circus. Those with an acute ear can pick up the lingering traces of her accent, placing her as being from the outskirts between Banshee Swamp and Raziela. Being part of Jasper's Circus, it's certain she has dark and perhaps dreadful origins...but few have been brave enough to pry.

According to sources, Belladonna was a quiet but curious kid. She read a lot, finding all the books she could on astronomy, paranormal activities, and ESP. Of course, such materials are limited when you live in the middle of nowhere. So when she became a teenager, Belladonna left home and started travels to expand her learning.

In order to pay her way, Belladonna began putting her skills into practice. The images she'd studies for so long came alive in her crystal ball; the tarot cards danced in her paws. Visions of the future played out beneath her eyelids; by touching someone's palm she could feel that person's pain, confusion, hopes and dreams. She quickly exceeded what her books told her and developed a real talent for telling the future.

Many curious legendaries and Misticpets came to her; her fortunes were just too accurate not to try. That's where the problems began. Since she spent her life keeping others at a distance in favor of her studies, Belladonna found she lacked tact and social skills. She'd always tell the blunt truth of what she saw in the future. Thus, she foretold many tragedies and heartache that played out just as she anticipated.

It wasn't long before people's hearts swayed. They saw her as the source of the tragedies. Soon after, the town she was staying in not-so-politely asked her to leave. This repeated in the next town she stayed in. And the next. Soon, her reputation preceded her. No town would even welcome her in.

With no one coming to get fortunes told, Belladonn's finances quickly ran out. Alone, she sat by the side of the road and considered returning to her home. It seemed like there was no other option available for her.

That's when Jasper came by. Curious about her suitcase and talismans, Jasper gave her a coin in exchange for his fortune. Delighted by what she foresaw, even with shadows lurking around the edges, Jasper offered her a position in his circus. Belladonna hesitated, unsure if she'd be welcome there in the end anyway.

Jasper reassured her that in his circus, darkness and fright rule alongside fun and delight. And so, Belladonna has once again been able to set up her table at every town they visit, doing what she loves.
