Slushie Quest, Part 4
Written By Fallout

They were surrounded. Powderpuff's fur stood on end and the little puff ball roared like a crazed anya kitten as he charged at one of the Mountain Monsters before him. It stared at him with a look of confusion on its face as he kicked at one of its legs, the effort doing little to no harm to the creature.

“I'm sorry, did we startle you?” one of the monsters asked Sebastion. “We heard a commotion below the snow and came to investigate. We would have helped dig you out, but you'd already made it out on your own by the time we got to you.”

Sebastion looked from the face of one of the monsters to the next and realized that these monsters weren't monsters at all! They were shyres! “Powderpuff, it's okay! I don't think they mean to hurt us!” he said to his little companion. Powderpuff collapsed in the snow panting, his fluffy body expanding and contracting with every desperate breath.

“Would you like to come in out of the cold for a bit?” one of the shyres offered. “Your friend looks like he'd like a little bit of rest.”

The shyres took the pair to a small settlement in a tiny enclave of mountain. It was sheltered from avalanches by a large overhang of rocks. Crudely made huts that were surprisingly warm inside surrounded a large bonfire where shyres were toasting carrots on sticks and a large pot of cocoa was being heated. There was a small fleet of flurries prancing and frolicking about it overseen by a kindly-looking elder.

“So what brings you to our mountain?” one of the shyres asked Sebastion. He gave the emperon and Powderpuff each a steaming mug of cocoa from the pot to warm them up a bit.

“We are actually on a quest,” Sebastion said, sipping the cocoa gingerly. “We are looking for the Golden Slushie.”

A sudden hush befell the chatting shyres. They all looked at Sebastion with surprise and worry at his statement. He wondered if they thought he was as crazy as he felt for going on such a quest, but to his surprise they didn't respond with mockery or skepticism.

“If it is the Golden Slushie that you seek, then we urge you to be careful,” the elder that had moments ago been watching the children spoke up, “for you are not the only one that is seeking it.”

“Squeak squeak?” Powderpuff asked.

“There is another, yes,” the elder nodded. “An obsideon ninja has been here searching for it for years. No one knows his name or who he works for. We only know him as The Shadow.”

Another shyre from the group that had rescued them whinnied. “You must be careful if you see The Shadow. He has been a bane to us since he got here. He steals from our stockpiles, sabotages adventurers like yourselves in order to thwart them from finding the Slushie before he does, and we believe he may have been setting off avalanches such as the one that buried you to slow people down. We've been rescuing travelers from him constantly.”

“So the Slushie is real?” Sebastion asked.

“We don't know. We've never seen it,” the shyre admitted. “But we believe it is possible.”

“Do you know where it might be at the least?”

“Hmm...if our legends serve correctly, I believe we might.”

After finishing their cocoa and a meal of stewed carrots and mountain potatoes, the weary travelers got some rest and then headed out early the next morning to continue their journey. The shyres lead the way down a path towards the direction of the fabled Slushie. “We believe this is the way which you seek,” a shyre said. “We wish you luck on your journey and hope that you may avoid The Shadow.”

“Thank you,” Sebastion said. “We'll be sure to stop in on our way down and let you know if we've found it.”

“Squeaky squeak!” Powderpuff added cheerfully.

The shyres stood at the end of the trail and bid them well as they watched them continue up the mountain. “What are the odds that we'll ever see them again?” one shyre said to the other.

“I bet you three carrots they get eaten by wild mountain rabbits,” the other replied.

Will our travelers find the Slushie or get eaten by wild mountain rabbits first? Who is this The Shadow that the shyres speak of? Find out next month on Slushie Quest!
