Character Spotlight: Alan Yehxil
Written By gemajgall

Knowledge for the sake of knowledge—that was all that ever mattered.

Alan Yehxil was unlike his peers, even as a youth. While the others dug tunnels for fun and games or crafted statues from stone, Alan explored. He'd spend hours wandering down the ancient caverns of his ancestors, taking notes of the mosaics and monuments they left behind.

When Alan wasn't wandering forgotten caverns, he was reading. He had finished every book in his parents' personal library several times by the time he was eight and his school's library before his thirteenth birthday. Soon, he was translating old glyphs left on cave paintings and trading for foreign scrolls from traveling merchants.

It's through one such scroll that he learned of the Lost Door that supposedly lead to an ancient repository filled with all the knowledge collected by the gurahdia and gargoyles. In that instant, it became his life's dream to find the repository and all the secrets lost within.

But dreams are never fulfilled easily.

Of course, Alan was careful and thorough in his preparations. He studied every scrap of lore on the repository, dedicating years to research before he even began to travel. It's during this time that his excellent yehxil vision began to give out, forcing him to wear glasses. Then, with glasses on his snout and a brown pack in hand, he set out to unearth the repository.

While seeking information in Ravi-Sorin, Alan met a young lirionox, who had just escaped from the pyramid with a sack full of treasure. Alan was very suspicious of him at first, expecting the other explorer to line his pockets with his loot. However, when Dakota Jones said, “These belong in a museum,” it was the beginning of a lasting friendship.

The two set out with the same goal. Across the Scarab Desert, through Raziela, and even down the Kelpie River they went, searching for clues. They encountered many red herrings and even more adventures, but always, the repository seemed as elusive as a mirage. Along the way, they made friends who aided in their search. They even became allies of the reclusive gargoyles and gurahdia of Metropolis Quarry.

As days turned into months and then years, it seemed Alan's dream was as far away as when he began. He became stooped with disappointment. Even Dakota left him after a devastating personal tragedy. Yet Alan continued on alone, never once lingering on his discouragement.

Feeling his age a little more each day, Alan considered retirement more and more. But his dream refused to die. That's when a sealed letter arrived for him from Metropolis Quarry, signed by the next generation of gargoyle leadership. The contents, a summons from the gargoyle Chief Blackrock and bearing his sigil, gave Alan renewed hope.

The energy he had as a youth returned to him in that moment. Alan raced to find Dakota. This time, this time they would find the repository and the fountains of knowledge within...
