Character Spotlight: Monty
Written By gemajgall

There's a name few are courageous enough to breathe around Sango Reef, and that name is Monty. Along with his henchmen, he bullied the citizens of the reef relentlessly; it took a united effort from Misticans everywhere to finally drive him away.

His reputation is all that is known about him; no one previously had dared ask more. However, one being was able to stand up to him with her own strength. Now, the sea witch tells all.

Growing up, Monty was easily the biggest Misticpet in school. He towered over the others, including the teacher. But he was not a gentle giant. He used his bulk for physical intimidation—it wasn't long before this became physical bullying of those weaker than him.

After several painful and unsuccessful attempts to stop him, the teachers and principals shrugged their shoulders, buried their heads in the sand, and came up with excuses for their inaction. Mostly, they claimed it was “a stage” that he would “soon grow out of.”

Meanwhile, smaller Misticpets trembled and hid when he passed, hoping for a moment of inattention or grace. During one such day, Monty had cornered a small Risylki between some rough corner behind the playground. The Risylki pleaded for mercy and finally threw down all of his lunch money at Monty's fins. The glimmering Mistic Cash on the sand held Monty's attention, and he let the smaller pet swim off as fast as he could. But the gears were turning in Monty's head as a toothy smile spread across his face.

From that day on, the school nurse noticed a drop in injuries from the bully, and the rest of the faculty breathed deeply in relief—they were certain Monty had mended his ways.

What they didn't see was what he did behind the playground, during the early hours of school, and on the currents home. Monty cornered his victims, demanding lunch money, toys, and homework answers in return for their safety. All of his victims complied with trembling—the loss of a yo-yo (even if it was a limited edition Znake Eye) was not worth the physical pain Monty threatened to unleash.

Needless to say, when Monty finally graduated and left the school for warmer waters, the entire community celebrated. Relief was felt by all his victims as they bought Turtle Turnovers and Mermaid Milkshakes from Daniel-san without having to worry about being confronted on their way to or from.

After a few years, Monty has all but been forgotten -- a bad memory. That is...until the day that he returned with a new, terrifying look and three henchmen following. Within a week and a half, Monty and his underlings dominated all of Sango Reef, demanding protection money and controlling the whole community through strength and fear. It took Officer Coppa getting Misticans into fighting form and some help from Captain Jack Skillow and his crew to finally drive the shark out and free Sango Reef.
