Personality:

Alfred is vain, hypocritical and bitter sarcastic towards himself. He considers himself to be the best at what he does because he has a sense of what it means to care for someone enough to put their life on the line for them.

He states he has a very small list of things he's good at so he enjoys pointing them out to others. He says vanity isn't simply just looks, and as such, he's vain about his accomplishments as well as his knowledge.

He also feels making light of things to be the best way to deal with trouble. And such, he'll often make unnecessary jokes to lighten the mood.

However, he doesn't like what he sees in the mirror, haunted by his deceased parents and is reminded of them each time he looks into the mirror. He thinks of himself as ugly and a waste due to being forced to live "alone".

He keeps to himself, emotionally anyway. He'd rather think to himself as he feels it's the only thing he's better at than using his staff.

He doesn't wish to be a burden to anyone and due to his shattered past, prefers to live his life as a loner.

But his heart feels otherwise, as he likes to express his emotions and feelings through snuggling and cuddling up those he trusts. He does so wordlessly, as he feels what he's doing needs no explanation, nor does he understand it himself.

He seeks companionship and someone to understand him.

Appearance:

Alfred stands as a lanky eighteen year old boy, due to being malnourished by his caretakers. He has slitted purple eyes with brown rings in the center, heavy with bags. His eyebrows are very thick and wild, making him capable of silly expressions. He has full lips but are very pale, much like his skin. His hair is a dusty brown tangled mess, long and pulled back in a ponytail atop his head. His large ears can be seen poking out from the sides. Due to being 5'11, he's very tall, with large hands and feet.

Attire:

On his back he wears a long brown cape that is slit down the middle, resulting in a wing-like design. The hood behind pulls over his head and two eye holes and a mouth one.

On his chest he wears a light brown chest plate with matching elbow and knee-pads.

He wears a pair of tattered blue pants that were once his father's jeans.

Relationships:

Clara:

Mike and Clara have strained relations. While she respects him and admires his will to go forward despite his loss, he often mocks Clara in order to make himself feel better. She finds his mockery of her ignorance of feelings and loss to be rude and cruel. However she finds his jokes to be charming, as his blunt humor amuses her.

She sees herself in him, both struggling to overcome stereotypes and become more than they are told they will be.

Mike's persistence and affection towards her is proof that her goal of creature equality and understanding can be reached.

She prefers calling him Alfred as her way of understanding a "joke" as well as thinking he needs to embrace who he once was. He protests but she believes this is for his own good.

The Ruler:

He holds little respect for the Ruler of the kingdom of elementals. He believes him to be tyrannical and cruel to his subjects and his people. While feeling sorry for himself and hating the ruler for what he has done, he doesn't hold a grudge.

He wishes for the day for him to see the error of his ways.

Mr. and Mrs. Zip:

Even though he lost his parents at a young age, he loved them deeply. He recalls reading with his mother and cuddling before bedtime. As with his father, learning to ride his bike and playing games together.

He misses the seemingly "carefree" life he lived as a child.

He talks to his parents in private each night before he sleeps.

Story:

I was lost in a world I thought I had known my whole life. It was a dark place in my mind, and I had forgotten who I was, but I hadn't lost prospect of who I was protecting.

While she wasn't the nicest or most with direct me, I was glad she was there. Without her I wouldn't have a reason to draw my sword, or a reason to receive the food her parents paid me.

I was a protector, her protector, and without her I guess, I wasn't anything at all. Cheesy and cliche, but it was true. I guess I should thank her? But then again who has time for trivial things like that.

In a desolate world where you're the only human, apologizing to a magical goddess seems petty, at least in my opinion.

A human, such a myself, wouldn't dare step out of line. As the ruler often points out, "I did you a favor by sparring you".

He never failed to mention the war with his people, the genetic mutants that lived amongst the grasslands, and the once proud human race.
What sparked such a brawl that left me the last one you ask? Well the answer is simple, perhaps too simple. The death of his wife awakened a rage so bloodthirsty and eager for revenge, a once kindhearted man changed in a single instance. It caused him to decimate an entire race due to revenge, no remorse in his eyes, all except one however.

They say my life was sparred out of the regret the once great leader of the mutants felt in his heart. However, I know the truth. Despite being only eight years old at the time, the memory is forever burned in my brain, as I witnessed him murder my father and laugh as I was whisked away from my mother. He enjoyed watching humans squirm now just as much as he had then. He saved me, not out of my mother's wishes when his goons took her life, but because he had a use for me.

Blindfolded, we arrived at the vine covered castle embedded deep in the woods. Inside was the royal family of whom I'd soon become very accustomed to.

While they had taken me in when I was a child, they weren't all that kind to me.

Sure I ate every day, and I guess in that respect I should be grateful, kissing their feet even. But in truth, table scraps of the wealthy are hardly food. Sleeping outside under the tarp as opposed to the woods outside of their land was a treat because it meant I wouldn't get rained on. But in reality, wet clothes were as close to clean as I got, as I was too "foul" to sit or be around their furniture or fancy garments. I watched daily as a boy, full of hope then, wishing for the day I could sit at their table as an equal. I would smile and thank them for the little they did to sustain my life.

How naive I was then, I could almost laugh at the mere notion of being seen with them. I stopped hoping they'd see me an equal, but more realistically, as someone they'd respect.

The grand ruler stated that my vile face would scar the poor children as well as taint his "beautiful flower" of a daughter.

I began to loathe the people who had taken me, not because of what they had done to my race, but because they did so without batting an eyelash.
Little separated the two genetically after all, appearance wise they looked almost identical to humans. Remove the sharper teeth, sunken faces and vine like veins within their skin and they were no different from me.
However, in their eyes, I was the monster, the mistake. They thought their evolution into elemental bending faeries to be a gift and my inability to do so, a plunder.

As such, I was given a task, something no other creature could take on.

The ruler made it explicitly clear that he couldn't put any of his men in danger to guard his daughter Clara from potential danger.

With armed guards who could easily snap me like a twig and weak from hunger, I could hardly fight back. I agreed to be his daughter's guard.
I found her to be exactly like her father, ignorant of anyone but she, vain and thick headed. With one simple difference however, she believed in freedom for every creature, including me.

I could hardly smile, but I appreciated her gesture of peace. She fully didn't understand all there was to the world, but then again, neither did I.
Knowing not much else besides my name and a handful of basic school years behind me, I had leave my choices up to chance and emotional support to myself and myself alone.

There are times when I feel I'll fade away as well, just as the rest of my race has, and with reluctance, I admit it frightens me.

Abandoning my real name, Alfred in favor of my middle name, Mike, was my best way of coping.

In times of crisis one has to adapt, become stronger after all. And unlike Alfred, Mike doesn't cry or get worried. There's no "Momma" to protect me anymore after all.

You tend to lose your humanity in a world that isn't human. But I will never lose sight of what's right; not revenge, but rather making a new era of peace, regardless of the past circumstances.

Clara might not be the smartest, but who am I to judge, better her than her violent father at the reigns. So I will protect her, hoping to help her pave way to a new beginning. Perhaps, maybe, even a new beginning for me as well? But that might be asking too much...
