But isn't love supposed to be beautiful?
Dance was an art that was admired but seldom respected in the Mughal society. The dancers were often called to the courts of the kings and in the homes of noblemen to entertain guests. They were admired and rewarded but never could they get dignity. Everyone envied their skill and talent but no one wished to learn it. Dance was the most beautiful and yet the most disrespectful art. No respectful family would allow their women to learn it or the men to meet or associate with dancers apart from when they were called to their homes during an occasional party. The society was an incredibly hypocritical one.
This dancer stood away from he counterparts. She had her face covered with a veil unlike the others and not once did she try to speak. As visitors came in she bowed her head and brought her palm to her forehead in an salaam as a gesture of respect acknowledging their arrival but she didn't speak to greet them like the other tawaifs. The tawaifs were the most stigmatized and yet the most graceful of dancers. They were well trained in every art and in manners and etiquette. Their art was the most admired and the least respected. They were refined and dignified but not respected by the society like all others in their profession.
This was Lucknow and the kotha where the tawaifs danced was the most well known in the region. Everyone also knew that the dancer who was always veiled and stayed away from the others was the most elegant of them. Their were rumors of her being a princess who had been forced to live the life of a wronged and disrespected tawaif after her father's kingdom was conquered by some other empire and her family killed. No one could verify the rumors and the girl seldom ever spoke about it or about anything for that matter. Had it not been for the fact that she also occasionally sang, she would have been considered mute.
No one ever saw her face but it was rumored that she was as beautiful as an angel. Her name was Arzoo an apt name for it meant 'Desire'.
The tawaif who had been presently dancing, ended her performance with a graceful bow and sat down beside her fellow dancers. "Will you dance today?" Someone whispered to the veiled one. She nodded and gracefully walked towards the center of the hall. The music begun and the tabla beats floated towards her. Automatically, her feet followed the beats. Every step was perfect. Every spin perfectly ended and not once did she miss a beat.
The audience looked on mesmerized.
As she ended with a bow, the mark on her neck was noticed. It was a strange marked that almost seemed burned into her skin. The mark was a symbol of the fact that someone had branded her to himself. Someone who was not even human and did not even understand the meaning of love. For the jinn Arzoo was just an obsession. He though of her as a possession he must guard and anyone who came near her was brutally killed.
The reason why she was reserved and quiet and why she didn't want to reveal her face was that she didn't want people coming near her and getting killed. She had lost all faith in good and in love. She didn't believe in the beauty possessed by the little things in life. Because her life had been marred by what was supposed to be something beautiful. Love was supposed to be beautiful...

Looks Though, she always has her face covered with a veil, she is really very beautiful, the reason why the jinn was attracted to her in the first place. Her eyes are dark brown, so dark, her pupils are almost invisible. She has long black hair that is always neatly braided. Arzoo only has a light tan due to her originally being from a mountainous kingdom. The tan is more a result of Lucknow's heat than anything else. She wears a long sleeved dress like kameez that ends at her ankles an underneath them are tight trousers and large anklets with lots of bells attached that she uses while dancing. A veil is always wrapped around her shoulders and face and she doesn't remove it even when dancing.
Personality Arzoo is a very reserved and quiet individual who seldom if ever speaks. She has lost faith in everything good and is simply fed up with her life. She lost faith in the goodness of love as it has been forcibly imposed on her. The jinn doesn't truly love her but is obsessive about her. So, she has lost all her freedom and happiness. She is graceful and elegant and is extremely polite and gentle though he chooses not to socialize with people, fearing for their safety. She also has a side that does not allow her to listen to any insults quietly. And if she's insulted, she'll retort back, though anger is seldom if ever visible in her except when she talks with or about the jinn.
Quirky facts
1) She's originally from a the mountains and lived for most of her life in the Kashmir valley.
2) The jinn has a brand on her as his 'mark'. So, whenever she gets near someone enough to get the jinn jealous, it burns. This is a warning for her to get away or the man would be killed.
