| In stories long-forgotten, written by civilizations long-fallen, entire lives have been lost to obscurity and faded into the past. Every culture has their own heroes, villains, lords, gods -- all woven into the rich tapestry of those people's worlds. But, when empires fall and societies are destroyed, what happens to those stories? In simpler times, one such civilization worshipped a wide array of gods and goddesses - the great six-legged wolf of the sun, the stream-tailed bird that brought life, the two-headed cat of the world beyond, the stout stone-ridged bear that brought order to the world - - and the rainbow-feathered serpent who spread chaos. Rarohenga was the eldest of the gods, who lived in the swirling tumultuous rivers of the beginning times, who formed the world as she danced and flew through the dreaming, who brought all manner of life to the land as her iridescent plumes fell to the barren soil. She was worshipped and revered by these people, and through their belief, she could exist. However, the people that brought her to life eventually met their end at the hands of more-violent, more-warlike cultures -- invasions of other tribes all but erased them from time and from history. Her people were slaughtered, the buildings razed, all signs of them stomped down into the dirt and the dust. There had been so little time - the pantheon of gods could barely cry to the fates before they were snuffed out. With noone left to believe in them and give them their faith, what could ever keep them alive? - but. But the end had been a whirlwind. A swirl of confusion and fright and despair; of sudden death and unstoppable aggression; of the anguish and rage of the gods. In a rush of emotion and action, and bolstered by the erupting-supernova strength of so many falling deities, all of the world was filled with raw, terrifying chaos. So the eldest god lived on. |
