Fallen Star
Written By Gemajgall

“Okay, so we agree that Vega is the best singer,” concluded Astra with an air of finality, glancing around at her companions. She was a pale star, glowing with white and yellow light, through which deep orange occasionally streaked. She leaned back casually, taking a sip from the goblet in her hand, and a mischievous smile crept over her face. “Hmm...so, who do you think is brightest?”

“It has to be Orion,” instantly replied a star named Estelle, who shone with every shade of green imaginable. “Who else can be brighter than him?”

“Mm...I think you're right...,” agreed a third star, with a vague sort of nod. She idly brushed her pink and lilac hair with a silver brush, seemingly only partially interested in the conversation.

“Spica is pretty bright too, you know” Astra replied to the third star. She seemed slightly put out that everyone was being so very agreeable.

“But not as bright as Orion,” added Estelle firmly, carefully filing her ivy-colored nails. She glanced up at another star in the room, a dark and beautiful woman with silver hair in ornate curls that flowed down her back. “Are you even listening to us?”

“Bits and pieces,” replied Boreal, smirking slightly and setting her hair brush down. “But truly I find no point in such a silly conversation. All the stars in the sky know who is the brightest and most graceful, so what is the point in discussing it?”

Astra smiled and stood up, approaching Boreal, “Could it be...you're jealous?” she asked with a teasing tone.

“Absolutely not.”

“Your face says otherwise,” prodded Astra, picking up a mirror and holding it up to Boreal. Boreal rolled her eyes disdainfully and pushed Astra's hand aside, causing the others to snicker.

Boreal swept her hair back with her pale fingers, tying it into a complicated up-do. “I am not jealous. I know what I am best at, and I am the strongest star in these heavens. My magic is completely unparalleled.”

Her comment was met with silence. Perturbed, she turned around only to see Estelle and Astra shift uncomfortably beneath her haughty gaze. “Well? What is it?” Boreal demanded.

Estelle coughed slightly, “We know you're strong...but...”

“Well...you know...Aurelius is powerful as well,” added Astra, as she inadvertently took a step backward. “Very much so, actually.” Suddenly, she was looking a tad nervous.

Estelle nodded in agreement, “He can stay on Mistica for weeks on end without becoming earthbound.” She coughed again. “And, well....I'm sorry Boreal. I know you're strong, but you're just not a match for him.”

The glacial look that Boreal gave them was unreadable. She stood with all the grace and dignity of a queen, dominating the room effortlessly. “Is that what you think? You think such a trifle makes a star powerful?” She gathered her skirt and began to walk away.

“B-Boreal? Where are you going?” asked Astra, timidly.

“To show you how powerful I really am,” she replied with her head tilted regally. “And if it takes staying on a dingy place like Mistica for a week or two, then so be it. I refuse to be dimmed by an upstart like Aurelius!” And with those final words, she left the room and then the skies.

Estelle blinked several times as they watched her go, “I don't know about the most powerful star, but she could match us all for pride."

I like this! It's an interesting take on what lead up to Boreal becoming earthbound.
