There was a time when the forces of the sprites allied with humans to oppose their eternal rivals, the imps. It was during the height of power for Mistica Kingdom before the royal family was driven into exile. Daydreams began to spread across the land—and the imp king feared for his power and the authority of nightmares.

He sought out allies to strengthen his army. But the fey and the gargoyles would have nothing to do with the imps, and the kelpies' need for water made them impractical. So the imp king turned his eyes toward humans. He watched them closely, searching for the darkness in their hearts he could exploit. And it wasn't long before he found it. There was a duke who desired power and wealth in the same way most Misticpets desire food and water. Both of which the then imp king promised.

However, the duke was also practical and cautious. He would not so easily forsake his own kind unless the power of the imp king was assured. And so the imp king thought and plotted—and in the shadows, he came up with a plan to not only strengthen his own alliance but also weaken that of his enemies.

It was an “apple of discord” of his own making. Using the darkest of magic, the imp king brewed a curse of pure nightmare and spread it across the domain of a noble sprite family. The next evening, in a show of power, he confronted the sprite rulers and told them of his curse. However, he lied, saying that the curse reveals the true nature of those it effects—that it would bring out the latent darkness in the souls of sprites.

The sprite rulers did not believe him. Nonetheless, rumors spread among sprites and men of the imp's curse revealing those with evil hearts. It wasn't long before members of the targeted noble family began to show signs of nightmares: purple hues and red eyes. Despite the sprite rulers' protests, others turned on them. However, the cursed family had friends of their own. Soon, a rift formed among the sprites, and the imp king sat back and laughed as they bickered and accused.

The duke also delighted in the manipulation and display of power; he secretly pledged his forces to the imps. Sprites retreated into the Darkwood Hollow and continued to remain rivals to the imps—a rivalry that continues to this day.

However, few heard of what became of the cursed sprites. Many assumed they had died off. Others, more cynical, assumed they joined the imp culture and fully integrated with them. The stories of their existence faded from the lips of men.

The truth is, the cursed sprites continued to live alone. They blocked off their estate with thick walls of thorns, hiding from those who'd hate them out of principle. Bit by bit, their line died off, and the truth of how they were cursed by the imps was forgotten by all. Today, only one heir remains. He is a sprite cursed with nightmares, barely able to accept himself and virtually incapable of making friends or allies. Until recently, he felt his entire destiny was solitude. His name is Adam.

Reveals "true nature of people" ----> Sprites turn on each other, just like the curse was lied about doing.

Why Imps are the better race.
