Character Spotlight: Hug Bug
Written By gemajgall

Infestation marks the migration of hundreds, if not thousands, of Misticpals from the deep forest regions across Seneca Town and its surrounding areas to the grasslands near Rordon Village where they breed. For as long as Misticans can remember, the migration happened like clockwork. It became symbolic of the celebration of love for many legendaries. And leading it all was the massive Hug Bug.

The Hug Bug is a unique being across all of Mistica in that he is, without competition, the largest Misticpal ever. He even dwarfs several Misticpet species. No other pal, even through potions, has come close.

Initially, the citizens of Seneca Town considered him to be a very large lovebug. However, he also calls cooties his cousins. This is something many Misticans have a hard time understanding; cooties and lovebugs are seen as two completely different types of pals. However, to the Hug Bug, they are all kin—all part of the same family.

His powers seem to flourish around Infestation, growing from affection. They're at their fullest by the time the Hug Bug arrives in Seneca Town. There, he sets up a small, temporary shop; in return for a number of his cousins, he gives out an Infestation Potion, allowing Misticpets to join in the Infestation spirit all year around by permeating them with love and affection and friendship.

Many have asked what he does with the cooties and lovebugs he collects. According to an interview, the Hug Bug collects his cousins who got lost in legendaries' houses and shops during their migration. He worries that they'd never make it to their nesting ground and might otherwise end up locked in a safety deposit box or worse—eaten! So the Hug Bug helps gather them to take them with him when he goes to the meadows, allowing them to start families of their own.

One strange thing about the Hug Bug is that during the time of Infestation, celebrating being together with loved ones, the Hug Bug himself stands alone. Several have mentioned finding this ironic—shouldn't someone so loving have someone to love him back? But the Hug Bug himself answered, “This time of year isn't just about dating and marriage—it's about all relationships. And I am surrounded by my family; how could I ask for anything more?”
