My Top 10 New Year's Resolutions (and how to keep them)
Written By Kite

1. Spend more time with family & friends
It’s true, fellow Misticans. I’m sure we all feel we should do this more. Whether or not we like to admit it, we take those closest to us for granted. We are often snappiest and moodiest with those who love us most, so this new year let’s all take the time to put in that extra bit of effort with those we love, and we will see just how much they appreciate it. Setting aside some time every week for friends and family is often more easily said than done. But let’s make this year, THE year, where we stop saying “I should do,” and instead say “I will do.”

2. Let’s get fit
Oh sure, we all say this from time to time, normally after we’ve had to dash for the bus or something, and arrived on board wheezing from the overexertion of having to run twenty feet. Well why don’t we all do something about that? Let’s grab our Lirionoxes and go hiking. Let’s go swimming with our Quarians and Risylkis. Let’s do some yoga or pilates with our Izabels. We can even take our Frodrinns and Skillows kite flying if we want to! Come on Misticans, let’s grab our towels and go!

3. Lose the Christmas bulge
Okay, this is never a fun topic, but we all know that we have a tendency to overindulge a little at Christmas, and can you blame us? Food, chocolate, cake everywhere! We are only human, and our willpower is never that strong. Sure, I know I’ve just had a full roast turkey with all the trimmings and two helpings of Grandma’s homemade Christmas pudding…but okay, if you REALLY want me to help you eat that tin of chocolate biscuits you got as a gift then of course I’ll oblige – I’m a people pleaser! It’s quite liberating to be able to say “Ahhh why not, it’s Christmas!” But alas, now it is not. So let’s all settle in for several months of grilled fish salads for lunch and whole grain cereals for breakfast… sigh…

4. Quit smoking
Tsk tsk… It’s hard I know, especially if you have smug ex-smokers swanning around you insisting “I did it, so can you!” But they do have a point, so why not? You’ll certainly be saving some money at the very least. And…. You’ll hate me for saying this but, I did it, so can you!

5. Have more ‘me’ time
We all need this, don’t we? We are always so preoccupied with everyone else that we forget to look after ourselves, and ourselves need some pampering too! So come on everyone, lets break out the coconut face masks (yes boys, this includes you) and chop up some cucumber and just relaxxx. Sounds good doesn’t it? Let me run you a nice hot bath and light some aromatic candles for you, so you can just slip off into a little personal paradise. Ahhhh, heaven.

6. Be better with money
This is never an easy topic to broach, especially so soon after Christmas. But we all know that the time has now come to tighten those purse strings and get back on financial track. It is unfortunate if you are one of these unfortunate people with a birthday in January, and I feel your pain – really, I do!! But I’m sorry, it’s some off-brand shower gel for your birthday again this year… Well, I’ve got to save up now haven’t I?

7. Learn something new
Ah yes, that foreign language you swore you would learn. The salsa classes you went to only one of. Remember that last year? It’s easy to start something new, the difficult part is continuing to do something new to the point where it is not new anymore. It requires dedication as we all know, as nothing new is fun all the way through. And it shouldn’t be anyway. It should be challenging! That is why we get that huge sense of achievement at the end. Let’s stick to it this time and dig our heels in. Pretty soon we’ll all be fluent in Japanese!

8. Help others more.
What do you mean help more? I am naturally a selfless continuously giving person…. Okay, well maybe sometimes I could help mom out a little more… Yes maybe I should clean my room a bit more often. Yes I could walk the dog sometimes if I HAD to! Well, maybe it is time that we actually do  these things a little more often. Let’s start with doing the dishes every other day, or putting our dirty plates inside the dish washer as opposed to just perching them on the side next to it. Every little thing really does help. And please please please, if the toilet roll is empty, take the empty roll off and put a new one on instead... It’s really not that hard.

9. Be more organized
Yes, homework needs to be done punctually, as we all know. Workloads have to be completed. I hate the word ‘deadline’ more than most, but it really does help to be a bit more organised with things. “Stop leaving everything until the last minute!” We’ve all heard that one haven’t we? Well, maybe it is now time to take heed of these wise words – probably administered by someone like me who is ALWAYS leaving things until the last minute, and make the effort to prepare more. Let’s start early on those school and work projects this year. It really does make a difference.

10. Go easier on yourself
This is one that’s closest to my heart, because I think every one of us is so hard on ourselves sometimes. You would never judge somebody else as a complete failure for not passing their driving test first time, so why do you beat yourself up so much when it happens to you? If your friend does not do well in an exam, you cheer them up and encourage them to study harder, whilst verbally bludgeoning yourself cruelly for doing the same thing. Relax, you are human, you make mistakes, and you are trying your best. That is more than enough.. Now come here and give me a hug.

Happy New Year Misticans!
